Roots Cafe

Roots Cafe Roots Cafe is a student-run sustainable lunch, serving local, organic and fair trade dishes every Wednesday in Massry Commons 12-1:30pm.

Roots Cafe emerged out of Siena College's campaign to bring "real" food to campus in collaboration with the Real Food Challenge. The Real Food Challenge is a not for profit organization which seeks to shift $1 billion nationwide in spending at the college and university level towards "real food." In order for food to be considered real it must fit into one of these five categories local, organic,

environmentally sustainable, humane and fair trade. Approximately 10 to 15% of Siena College's purchases are sourced through one of these five channels. A group of students which include Travis Brodbeck, Casey Gallagher, Alana Strassfield, Amanda Knipple and Patrick Bunk, Lauren Griffith and Dustin Stiffler are working to commit Siena to the Real Food Challenge which is an agreement to source 20% of our food through the aforementioned channels. Currently Roots Cafe serves approximately 150 Siena Community members every Wednesday. Eventually, which increased student, faculty and staff support, we'd like to expand Roots Cafe. If you're interested in getting more involved contact Casey Gallagher at [email protected] or Alana Strassfield at [email protected].

All about the Syrian Conflict Lunch:

We all hear about Syria and the several issues going on there on the news, but few take the time to sit down and talk about it. Syria has been engaged in civil war for the last six years, with different groups trying to seize control of the country.

The fighting is between:

-Soldiers who support the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad,
-fighters known as rebels, who don't want Assad to be in power anymore, and
-the group that call themselves the Islamic State.

The IS is a militant group with extreme, violent views, which has used this violence against anyone who doesn't agree with what they think. They then moved into eastern Syria and, in the chaos of the war, they were able to gain land and power there too

Millions of ordinary people living in Syria have had to escape from their homes to find somewhere safer to live.

According to the United Nations (UN),almost five million Syrians have had to leave the country. Many have gone to neighbouring countries, like Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey or Iraq.

Six million more people have tried to find safety elsewhere in Syria.

Lots of children can no longer go to school because their schools have been destroyed or there are no teachers where they have moved to.

Turkey and Lebanon have each taken in more than one million Syrians, while Jordan, Iraq and Egypt have become home to hundreds of thousands more.

Please join us in solidarity in support of those that were killed in this conflict, and to sit down and talk about the injustices occuring at Syria.

We will be serving:

Samaka Harra (chili fish)

Dawood Basha (Syrian meatballs; we will be using vegan meatballs)

Mujadara (lentil pilaf)

Basbousa - semolina cake with coconut and fresh berries.

We look forward to seeing you there!
