Eg. : Paul had to race against time to board the train.

When {the thing} is an important one.
Eg. The rejection proved a marquee thing for his career.
It means the rejection he faced played a very important role in hos career. Maybe, it had motivated him.

Meaning :Joe has learned something from David.
Example: Joe seems to have taken a leaf out of David's book as he is being so gracious, just like David.
