🤔 How can immersive technologies transform the way we experience cultural heritage?

👏 Our new website article introduces the work of the Open Virtual Worlds (OVW) Research Group at the University of St Andrews, an interdisciplinary team combining expertise in computer science, heritage studies, history and the creative arts to build new digital pathways for understanding the past.

💡Within the HERITALISE Project, the OVW team contributes expertise in immersive environments and user-centred heritage interpretation, helping translate complex digitised datasets into meaningful and interactive experiences.

🖥️ Their work supports the development of virtual museum ecosystems, extended reality (XR) environments and community-focused heritage applications aligned with the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH).

😊 From the virtual reconstruction of St Andrews Cathedral to immersive experiences developed with partners like the Timespan Museum and the West Highland Museum, the OVW group demonstrates how digital heritage can move beyond preservation to become something audiences can truly explore.

🌥️ Volunteer Opportunity: Cloud Cèilidh (Remote)

The West Highland Museum is recruiting our first cohort of remote volunteers to help catalogue and share stories from the fascinating Alexander Carmichael Collection — a nationally important collection of Gaelic material culture.

You’ll work with digitised records and photographs, linking images to object records and uncovering stories that can be used in exhibitions, learning resources and online content. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in Highland life, Gaelic culture and heritage research.
