The Tribeca and Sheffield award-winning Peruvian documentary RUNA SIMI by Augusto Zegarra opens Friday, August 28, for an exclusive one-week theatrical engagement at Firehouse: DCTV’s Cinema for Documentary Film in New York City.
The film follows Fernando Valencia, a voice artist and Indigenous activist from Cusco, Peru, on his ambitious quest to dub Disney’s THE LION KING into Quechua—the ancestral language also known as Runa Simi.
What begins as one man’s dream becomes a joyful and moving celebration of Indigenous culture and a powerful call for language justice, cultural reclamation, and the right to experience stories in one’s own language.
Winner of the Albert Maysles Award for Best Documentary Director at Tribeca, the Youth Jury Award at Sheffield DocFest, and the Ibero-American Award at Palm Springs, among many other awards.

We are deeply saddened by the news that Professor Johanna Fernández of Baruch College, CUNY Graduate Center PhD Program in History, and The Graduate Center, CUNY passed away on July 30, 2026.

The CLACLS team had the honor of working alongside her on events and committees over the years. Professor Fernández brought knowledge, generosity, and energy to everything she touched.

She was the author of several major contributions to Latino Studies, most notably The Young Lords: A Radical History, which shaped how a generation has come to understand the movement.

We mourn her loss and take comfort in knowing that her legacy in scholarship, activism, and mentorship will continue.

We are hiring! CLACLS is looking for a Research Associate / Postdoctoral Fellow. Candidates must have a Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability. A preferred candidate should have demonstrated experience in applying for grants and fellowships, supervising fellows and staff, editing publications, and organizing events. The candidate should also have the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. Candidates should have their doctoral dissertations (or equivalent) in hand and have completed their dissertations within the last five years.

We are proud to announce the publication of one more volume of CLACLS “Notes from the Field,” a collection of seven conference proceedings authored by CLACLS Summer Fellows.

Among them is “Teko Yma Ayvu Jere: A Participatory Approach to Revitalizing Paĩ Tavyterã Guaraní” by Celeste Escobar, PhD student in Linguistics.

The Paĩ Tavyterã Guaraní language, spoken in northeast Paraguay—primarily in the departments of Amambay and Concepción—exists within a highly challenging context, as the region is considered a “red zone” due to transnational organized crime. Despite being a living language, Paĩ Tavyterã faces critical challenges in intergenerational transmission, including language shift, migration, and the loss of traditional spaces of use. Community-driven documentation and revitalization initiatives are therefore essential for preserving oral knowledge and sustaining Paĩ cultural identity.
