ental Organizations Registration statute, 2013. The Organization is based in Kiseitaka Local Council One, in Bugiri District. Brief background
FRIENDS CARING CHILDREN CENTER (FCCC) is a non-profit CBO founded in 2013 by a group of 9 people heading from Kampala central (Kampala District), Western District of Uganda (Masaka), Southern Region of Uganda (Mubende) and Eastern District of Uganda (Bugiri District). Initially to address the HIV/AIDS, PHAs (Person Living with HIV and AIDS), Orphans and Gender issues. However, with time, programs including Human Rights and Good Governance, Food and Income security will be adopted. In 2013, FCCC was granted a CBO legal status by Bugiri District Local Government. Accordingly, In 2014, FCCC became a fully pledged CBO Registered with Bugiri District NGO Forum as an Organization operating within Bugiri District. FCCC has it’s Headquarters in Bugiri District (Town Council) and remains the Active CBO operating in the District of Bugiri offering services in the following thematic areas:-
HIV and AIDs (PHAs), Orphans, Promotion of girl child education and gender Based violence issues cross cutting in FCCC implemented in Bugiri District. Out of Bugiri as previously honored as Bugiri District as areas of operation within FCCC coverage respectively. FCCC is affiliated to various local and national thematic networks for synergy. These include Bugiri District HIV/AIDS committee (DHAC), FCCC, Young Youth Development Association (YYDA), Bugiri District HIV/AIDS networks. Current Intervention
Under the intervention of FCCC, groups of PHAs have been formed in the various parts of Bugiri District, Kapyanga Sub-County, Kiseitaka Parish, and Kiseitaka village. In the assessing community related problems and challenges resulting from HIV/AIDS, FCCC conducted a community needs assessment from 4th April -16th May 2014. A total of 50 members of PHAs 35 females and 15 males) participated in the assessment that was intended to find out the needs/expectation of individuals PHAs before serious intervention could be made. The challenges identified includes:-
• Feeding problem in community among widows and orphans which has resulted into high rate of school dropouts of OVCs in search for food.
• Poor transport means for clients to access drugs in hospital like Bugiri, Bugiri hospital.
• Lack of trainers/instructors to train and organize them on activities like music, Dance and Drama (MDD) from which income could be raised to promote self reliance;
• Lack of support/funds to support IGAs undertakings;
• Ignorance of community members about the HIV/AIDS and stigmatization problem among them that still calls for intensive sensitizations;
• Inadequacy and delays in supply of drugs to clients from those hospital i.e. couples with allergies to septrine;
• Lack of basic support for the orphan children living positively such as food, medical care, education.
• Inadequate supply of kits like Jericane for safe drinking water, water guards, mosquito nets, Condoms and training kits/manual/information and other IEC materials generally;
• Finally, PHAs especially women have problems of cough/lung cancer, eye infections resulting from using wood fuel with unimproved energy saving stoves for cooking with it’s related carcinogen problems
In the attempt to address some of the above challenges, FCCC has trained 10 community members in prevention and transmission of STIs, family planning and home based care. The trainees came from mainly: Kiseitaka Parish PHAs, Bugiri. FCCC has created linkages with Bugiri, Bugiri HIV/AIDS program (AHAP) to extend services assistance to the PHA on some of the problem identified in the assessment above. However, given the magnitude of the HIV/AIDS and related issues, FCCC with more development partners if sustainable impact is to be realized in the struggle against the HIV/AIDs epidemic in Bugiri District respectively in Eastern Region.
