The 18th annual Kwame Bediako Memorial lecture was held on 3 June 2026 at the British Council Hall in Accra in honour of its founding Rector, Rev. Prof. Kwame Bediako. The, Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, chairperson of the ACI Council, served as chairman for the event.
The keynote speaker, Fr. Dr Michael Kodzo Mensah, Senior Lecturer at the Department for the Study of Religions, University of Ghana, presented a paper titled, โOne thing God spoke; two things which I heardโ (Ps 62:12): Bediako, The Hebrew Psalter and the Dynamics of Biblical Exegesis in Africa.
The presentation underscored that the vital place that the interpretation of Scripture plays in African Theology. He noted that from the beginning of the initial engagements of indigenous Africans with the inspired texts, African readers have persistently challenged traditional Western paradigms regarding the reader, the methodologies, and the purpose of Biblical Text interpretation.
Fr Dr Mensah highlighted Kwame Bediakoโs contributions to this discourse, including his advocacy for the principles of translatability and the binary exegesis of text and context. These principles significantly support the current proliferation of the Mother Tongue Biblical Hermeneutical Approach and other African Contextual Approaches. He went on to illustrate how Bediakoโs questions and resolutions are anticipated in the Hebrew Psalter, notably in Psalm 62.
Fr Dr Mensah posited that the concept of binarisms as an interpretive principle, which Bediako ardently defended, is embedded within what has been regarded as a somewhat enigmatic Psalm. Identifying these binary principles not only enhances our comprehension of Bediako as a pioneering African Theologian but also motivates a new generation of African Exegetes to further extend the frontiers of African Biblical Interpretation, including approaches such as the parallel interpretation of Biblical and African Indigenous Sacred Texts.
The occasion was enlivened by the Dam City Chorale, performing an array of melodious compositions, and the gathering included the family of the late Rev. Prof. Kwame Bediako, along with friends and partners of ACI.
