Welcome back Waterloo. In our efforts to support a safe return to more in-person experiences, you can now submit your proof of vaccination. We urge you all to submit your information as quickly as possible. For those who request exemption for medical or protected human rights grounds, the usual processes for accommodation requests will be followed. We expect that accommodations on these grounds will be rare. Follow the prompts in the proof of vaccination form.

Ensuring high rates of vaccination remains the most important way we can protect our and reduce the spread of COVID-19. As soon as we have guidance from the government, you can expect to hear more from us.

How to qualify for the new open work permit

In order to be eligible for this one-time open work permit, applicants must show that they:

- have applied under one of the new permanent residence pathways;
- were authorized to work at the time of their application;
- hold a valid work permit that is set to expire within the next four months;
- have temporary residence status, maintained status, or are eligible to restore their status at the time their open work permit application is submitted;
- are in Canada at the time their open work permit application is submitted;
- were employed in any occupation at the time their permanent residence application was submitted; and
meet the language requirements of the stream under which they applied at the time their application was submitted.

The open work permit is also available to the applicant’s spouse or common-law partner and dependent children over the age of 18, as long as they are also in Canada.

Canada to introduce NEW open work permit for essential workers and international student graduates

Temporary residents who applied for the new pathway to permanent residence for essential workers and graduates can now get an open work permit while they wait for the results of their application.

Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino has announced a new open work permit option for essential workers and international student graduates in Canada.

Starting July 26, temporary residents who applied for the newly-launched pathway to permanent residence will be eligible for an open work permit while they wait for a decision on their application.

What travellers to Canada can expect on July 21

Before the end of the day on July 21, the Canadian government will have to make a decision on whether or not to extend its travel restrictions.

Currently, Canada’s borders are closed to non-essential travel. Those allowed to enter are subject to quarantine measures, unless the government considers them to be fully vaccinated. Also, direct flights between Canada and India are still suspended.
The federal government will have to revisit these measures in the coming days, as the orders-in-council are set to expire. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been touting a gradual reopening of the border, suggesting the next phase will affect fully vaccinated tourists.

New immigration to Canada falls again in May 2021
Canada only landed 17,000 new immigrants in May, one of the lowest monthly totals during the coronavirus pandemic.

International students may have advantage over permanent residents coming from abroad with foreign credentials and work experience.

International student graduates may be eligible to apply for a Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). This is an open work permit that allows graduates of a designated learning institution (DLI) to work for any employer in Canada and gain invaluable Canadian work experience.
