With the support of our amazing volunteer tutors and school partners, we successfully navigated our way back to in-person tutoring this year! The one-on-one tutoring model provided much needed individualized reading instruction and confidence-boosting for the students we served this year. Here are a few photos from this year's tutoring and end of year celebrations. We look forward to expanding the program at additional schools next year, so please reach out if you are interested in learning more about tutoring!

As a partnering agency with SBCS, the Children's Initiative had the opportunity to create a library for the unattended migrant youth being sheltered at the Convention Center. It's been a great success! If anyone is interested in purchasing a book for a child, please see our Amazon book wish list (Harry Potter & Twilight in Spanish are in high demand): https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/VR1TPTAEDMJT?ref_=wl_share
The Children's Initiative has created a Spanish language library inside the San Diego Convention Center to serve all the unaccompanied migrant children and youth currently being sheltered there. There is a book exchange system in place so that youth are able to read multiple books while staying there. Youth are also able to keep a book of their choice when they leave, since their journey to their sponsor relative is often a long one. Happy National Volunteer Appreciation Week! We are so grateful for our amazing volunteers, dedicated tutors who are committed to helping San Diego students succeed and reach grade level reading. Even though our year was sadly cut short, it was incredible to observe the development of mentoring connections and watch as students improved both their self-confidence and their reading abilities. It was a successful year despite its brevity and we are very much looking forward to when we can safely return to expanded learning programs and continue serving students in need of reading support!

Here's a wonderful grassroots organization that just popped up to deliver free food to seniors so they can stay home during the COVID-19 outbreak. Going to grocery stores can be very stressful right now as it increases risk of exposure. If you or anyone you know could benefit from this service, please reach out to them!

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! We hope you celebrate by helping a child in your life learn to love reading! You can read a book aloud to them, take them to the library to explore books, let them practice reading to you, or provide them with a book for their home library.
Only 55% of 3rd graders in San Diego County met the achievement standards last school year. Children who do not read proficiently grow into adults who are unable to read well...Over 500,000 adults in San Diego County do not have the basic reading skills to perform everyday tasks. It is never too late to help a child (or adult) learn to read!
