Meet incredible animals, support threatened species, and help us protect, respect and restore nature. We have been caring for kangaroos since 2009. I don't quite remember how we started, but we ended up with a very young male western grey named Joe. Unfortunately he didn't survive a week due to his health, which devastated us and made us realise just how fragile kangaroos really are. We could not

give up, so, one day i offered to assist another carer in Snowtown, when I arrived she did the normal thing of checking me over to make sure I was suitable to even touch a kangaroo. A thing that all carers do! And when I left she gave me an eastern grey, Joseph, and a western grey, paskeville Joe (PJ). Lorraine has been vital in showing and teaching me all about these wonderful kangaroos. The mob has grown since then. Usually we have about twenty in the sanctuary and when one unfortunately passes over the rainbow bridge, we take on another. Now we could not think of being without them, and have now set up our fully fenced and vermin proof sanctuary in the Adelaide Hills. Along with the kangaroos we now breed critically endangered species known as the Brushtail Bettongs (Woylies). As well as being involved with the rescue and surrogate mothering of injured and orphaned joeys. We also provide limited trauma services and have a network of vet clinics and other carers to assist our efforts. We are a registered charity with ACNC and receive many calls from people wanting to donate money, food and their time (volunteers) towards the care of joeys. All are wonderful gestures and we work to assist those that call on us. We also arrange tours of our sanctuary day and night depending on what you wish to view in their natural habitat. Kangaroos day and night. Bettongs (both brushtail and rufous) at night. Cecil the Emu is also available and loves his visitors. Edna has decided it’s time she started pulling her weight around the sanctuary. 😂🦘

Apparently standing in the footwell of the Gator now counts as “helping”.

No licence.
No qualifications.
Absolutely no idea where we’re going.

But the enthusiasm is there. 😂

Behind the scenes of Woylie conservation. 🧬🥔

Over the past couple of nights, we’ve been assisting with the temporary trapping of 20 Woylies as part of university research into their genetics and population health.

Each Woylie was carefully trapped, assessed, sampled and then released back into the sanctuary.

DNA and faecal samples can provide incredibly valuable information about things such as genetic diversity, relatedness and the overall health of a population — all of which helps guide better conservation decisions into the future.

This is the less glamorous side of conservation work: late nights, traps, paperwork, samples… and a lot of very unimpressed Woylies. 😂

But every little piece of information helps us understand these animals better and gives us a stronger foundation for protecting them.

Conservation isn’t just about keeping animals alive. It’s about making sure populations remain healthy, genetically diverse and sustainable for generations to come.

Dinner service starts at 6.
Ziggy arrived at 5:55. 😂

While the Woylies patiently* waited for us to put their food out, Ziggy the Brushtail Possum decided waiting was for amateurs.

Why wait for table service when you can simply climb into the bucket, stand on the lunchbox and help yourself directly from the kitchen? 😂

Meanwhile, the Woylies are hopping around underneath watching this absolute betrayal unfold.

Ziggy: “There appears to have been a misunderstanding. This is MY buffet.”

Woylies: 🥔🥔🥔 EXCUSE US?!

“Patiently” may be a generous description. 😂

Well… Brad finally told us what he was trying to say. 😂🦘
Firstly, congratulations to Kim Hatchard, whose caption had us laughing:
“I’d like to make one thing perfectly clear… I have absolutely no idea how I’m getting down.” 😂🏆

But there was something none of us knew when we started this competition...
Brad actually DID have some news.
We have recently discovered that Coffey has a tiny joey developing in her pouch. 🥹💚
It's still very early days, so it'll be quite some time before we get to see the little one — but we're absolutely thrilled.
So perhaps Brad's caption should have been:
“I've been trying to tell you people… I'M GOING TO BE A DAD!” 😂
Congratulations Brad & Coffey. 🦘💚
And now begins the long wait for that first little face to appear from Coffey's pouch. 📸🥹

The city below is winding down… meanwhile, Woylie peak hour has begun. 😂🥔🌙

With the lights of suburbia twinkling below us, things are considerably less peaceful up here.

Woylies arriving from every direction, hopping into each other, inspecting the camera, bumping the tripod and generally behaving like nobody has fed them in approximately 400 years.

All because they know dinner is coming. 😂

There are no lanes.
There are no road rules.
There is absolutely no personal space.

Just a small army of bouncing potatoes reporting for the night shift. 🥔🦘🌙
