【More than a Student Exchange at the University of Exeter】
Before going to Exeter, I thought student exchange was only about “learning something new in a different country”. However, I realised it is also about cultural adaptation, stepping out of my comfort zone and life skills development after the six-month student exchange programme at the University of Exeter.

The three modules I selected in this exchange semester introduced me to a wide range of new knowledge. In forensic science lectures and workshops, I learnt to evaluate claims and analyse evidence logically. These trainings have strengthened my approach to information acquired during clinical situations, enabling me to be more critical, responsible and sensible in practice. In the evolution theory class, I practised using frameworks and equations to explain biological changes. This gave me new perspectives on disease transmission and healthcare management.

It wasn’t easy to familiarise myself with the new courses and adapt to different learning environment at first, but the support I gained from my friends and classmates in Exeter helped me establish and enjoy new routines. Stepping out of my comfort zone eventually became something fun and fruitful.

Beyond academics, the exchange experience provided invaluable opportunities for personal growth and exploration. From Northern Lights in the Arctic Circle to eye-opening architecture in Spain and ancient history in Italy, each journey brought a different lesson. These experiences strengthened my courage to explore the world with uncertainties, enhance my ability to reflect and communicate across cultures, and build resilience even when I feel lost. The past six months have enhance my competence in reflective and evidence-based patient care. All these meaningful memories will stay with me long after I return to Hong Kong.

【Alumni Spotlight: Passing the Torch, One Heartbeat at a Time】
At the HKU School of Nursing, we strongly believe that true nursing leadership goes beyond clinical excellence. It is about passing on experience, professionalism and a sense of purpose from one generation to the next.

Our alumna, Ms Sylvia Wan, graduated from the Bachelor of Nursing in 2003 and is now Department Operations Manager of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Over the years, she has developed extensive expertise in cardiothoracic and transplant nursing, and was part of the team that introduced Asia's first Organ Care System. Beyond her pursue of clinical excellence, she is also committed to nurturing the next generation, including through her role as a mentor in the Bachelor of Nursing – Advanced Leadership Track (BNurs-ALT) programme, passing on her professional knowledge and passion for nursing.

"This is more than just mentorship," she says. "It is a way of giving back and carrying the profession forward." The passion and aspirations of her students also continually remind her of the sense of purpose that first brought her to nursing.

At HKU Nursing, we build strong foundations in clinical judgment and independent thinking, while nurturing mentorship and professional connections that allow experience, knowledge and passion for nursing to be passed on. Together, we continue to develop future nursing leaders and carry forward a legacy of professional excellence.

Invest in a legacy of professional excellence at HKU!
