AkiraChix

AkiraChix Empowering generations of women to be creators, drivers, leaders and decision-makers in STEM AkiraChix activities revolve around the following four areas.
1.

Networking - We organise networking events with the aim of connecting the already small percentage of women in the technology industry. These include women in the workforce, as well as those in University aspiring to take up technology related careers. This promotes the spirit of collaboration, and encourages women to contribute in the field of technology.

2. Training - We run a technical trainin

g program that targets young women from poor social and economic backgrounds in Nairobi. The training program addresses the gender inequalities in the access and use of ICT. Through this training program Akirachix seeks to transform the ICT system in Kenya by increasing the number of women who are technology consumers and those who technology creators.

3. Outreach- We run outreach activities that target universities in Kenya through a project dubbed Mobile Garage, funded by infoDev. The main aim of these outreach activities is to create sustainable businesses for the knowledge economy through mobile applications development and entrepreneurship. These project targets both young men and women interested in mobile technology.

4. Mentorship - In Kenya, career paths are chosen in high school . High school students select subjects that determine which career to pursue in Institutions of higher learning while in their 3rd year. With this in mind, AkiraChix has embarked on a high school outreach program that will encourage female students to select careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The pilot program began with students from Precious blood High School Riruta. AkiraChix members have bi-monthly meet ups with students, Introducing them to the different facets of technology. In 2011, through mentorship and advice from AkiraChix, a group of girls from the school founded an initiative known as AZMA, a social network to consolidate and expand community service efforts among high school students in Kenya.

Data shows that tech solutions designed by women are 35% more likely to address community-level challenges (2025 Global Gender Gap Report).
This points to a critical shift: when women lead the development of technology, innovation becomes more inclusive, relevant, and impactful.
Girls shaping the digital future goes beyond participation;it is about leadership. By building technology from the ground up, they identify and address the blind spots that traditional systems often overlook.
When girls lead, solutions reach further, communities benefit more deeply, and women’s voices play a stronger role in shaping technologies that serve the world.

Better education. More access. Stronger economies.

When young women are equipped to learn, work, and earn, the impact goes far beyond individuals.

It’s not just equity, it’s economics.

What happens after codeHive graduates enter the workforce?

In the first transition, from internship to full-time, we’re seeing income jumps of about 40%. After that, growth continues at around 20% as careers progress.

The goal isn’t just entry into tech, it’s sustained growth once they’re in.

Tech knows no borders, and neither should opportunity!

This year, we expanded our footprint to Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Eswatini.

We are intentional about scouting talent wherever it exists; looking beyond the obvious and reaching young women who might otherwise be overlooked.Because every time our reach grows, so does access to education and opportunity.
