This is exercise No.2 taken from Oscar Peterson’s book Jazz exercises, Minuets, etudes & pieces for piano. It’s a great book for getting stuck into learning some Jazz, each exercise is followed by an etude which is a great way of incorporating what you’ve just learned. Also if you put Oscars book on a stand it feels like he’s looking over you watching for mistakes.
He doesn’t need no explanation, if you don’t know him youtube him, he’s a jazz monster.
Side note: if you notice a kind of humming sound on any of his records, it’s him singing along, like many of the greats he would sing his improvisations at the same time. It’s a great way of making more melodic lines.
