Practical steps and tips for graduate school in the US and Canada

Getting into graduate school in the US or Canada is not easy, and additional barriers faced by Latin American students can make the process even more challenging. However, armed with knowledge of the process, the appropriate resources, ample preparation, and sound advice, more Latin American scientists who desire to study abroad can do so, providing unique perspectives and much needed diversity in our graduate communities. In this round table, I hope to demystify the process, from the initial decision to pursue your education abroad, to finding your dream professor and institution, completing a successful application, and ultimately positioning yourself for success in graduate school. Panelists, including professors who work in the Neotropics, and Latin American graduate students training in the US or Canada will share their insights on how to decide whether attending graduate school abroad is right for you, how best to prepare yourself for success, how to prepare a winning application, and how to fund your study abroad. Finally, we will open the session to questions from the audience. While this round table is primarily
geared towards Latin American students interested in attending graduate school abroad, anyone applying to graduate school in the near future could benefit from attendance. Attendees will leave the round table with a clearer idea of whether grad school in the US or Canada is right for them, and an understanding of the practical steps required.

Using embroidery art to talk about birds!

Art in ornithology has appeared over the millennia on media ranging from cave walls, paper, canvas, threads and sculptures. What can we learn when producing bird art? Naturalistic observations and documentation of species or a scene makes us dive in and absorb the content we are registering. To accomplish scientific art, one has to study morphology, behavior and body positioning, details of subspecies, and many other facets. In this talk, we will discuss art in ornithology and, more specifically, using embroidery art to communicate science to a broader audience.

Confirmed speaker 🦉🦅🦆

Scott is the Ordway Professor of Conservation Biology in the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida. He studies the ecology and conservation of bird communities, mainly in the Neotropics, but also in Africa and Southeast Asia. Most of his graduate students use environmental gradients as proxies for time when trying to predict how habitat fragmentation, urbanization, and climate change will change bird communities. Scott is especially interested in how abiotic factors affect biotic interactions such as interspecific territoriality, mixed-species bird flocks, interspecific aggression, and nest predation.

The eleventh and last workshop of the II Ornithological Congress of the Americas to be released is "Best Practices for Using eBird Data: accessing and preparing eBird data for analysis in R”.

This workshop is intended for those interested in working with raw eBird observation data, there will be a separate workshop covering the modeled eBird Status and Trends data products. The workshop will involve hands-on R programming requiring intermediate knowledge of R.

The tenth workshop of the II Ornithological Congress of the Americas to be released is "De la libreta a las apps para colectar datos de campo”.
