Consider taking a Mental Health First Aid course. Why?

Because one in three Canadians will experience a mental health problem at some point in their life. The earlier a problem is detected and treated, the better the outcome. Mental Health First Aid Canada gives people the skills to provide that early help that is so important in recovery.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate treatment is found or until the crisis is resolved.

The MHFA Canada program aims to improve mental health literacy, and provide the skills and knowledge to help people better manage potential or developing mental health problems in themselves, a family member, a friend or a colleague.

The program does not teach people how to be therapists. It does teach people how to:

1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health problems.
2. Provide initial help.
3. Guide a person towards appropriate professional help.

MHFA aims to:

1. Preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others.
2. Provide help to prevent the mental health problem from developing into a more serious state.
3. Promote the recovery of good mental health.
4. Provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem.

The NMMA participated in the Northern Connections Job Fair last Wednesday. Here are a few photographs of our table at the event.

We had two lucky winners -- Edna and Christie -- take home first aid kits from our draw. Matthew and Bonnie each took home a consolation prize of a set of "Think and Be Safe" playing cards.

We're excited to advise that the NMMA has been granted recognition from The Government of Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) as an agency able to provide Flagperson training in Manitoba. The Flagperson course consists of four hours of classroom training and (approximately) one hour of a practical/hands-on component where students get to try actual flagging of vehicle(s). The practical component is a mandatory piece of Flagperson training.

If you are interested in taking a Flagperson course, please contact [email protected] for more information.

NOTE:
1. Flagperson certificates are valid for three years from date of issue; and
2. You must be 18 years of age to work as a Flagperson.
