Tomi Adeyemi was born on August 1, 1993, in the United States to parents who emigrated from Nigeria. She grew up in Chicago and was not exposed to her Nigerian heritage until she was an adult. This lack of exposure led to a feeling of isolation and a sense that she didn't belong.

In college, Adeyemi began to explore her Nigerian heritage more deeply. She read books about African mythology and history, and she began to write stories about young women who were empowered by their heritage. These stories eventually became the basis for her debut novel, Children of Blood and Bone.

Children of Blood and Bone is a fantasy novel set in the fictional land of Orïsha. In Orïsha, magic has been outlawed and maji, people who are born with magical powers, are persecuted. The story follows Zélie Adebola, a young maji who is determined to restore magic to Orïsha.

Children of Blood and Bone was published in 2018 and was an instant success. It won the Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy, the Waterstones Book Prize, and the Hugo Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book. The novel has also been translated into over 30 languages.

Adeyemi's success has made her a role model for young people of color. She is a powerful example of how young people can use their voices to change the world. She is also a reminder that it is never too late to learn about your heritage and to embrace who you are.

Today we celebrate the life of Micere Githae Mugo, born Madeleine Micere Githae in 1942. She died on 30th June 2023. Micere Mugo was a Kenyan playwright, author, activist, instructor and poet.
She was a literary critic and professor of literature in the Department of African American Studies at Syracuse University. She was forced into exile in 1982 from Kenya during the Daniel Arap Moi dictatorship for activism and moved to teach in Zimbabwe, and later in the United States. She taught Orature, Literature, and Creative Writing.

Calling all primary school students!

We are excited to announce the first season of the Sauti Writing Contest, a new writing competition for primary school students in Kenya. The theme for the first season is "My Story." Students will be able to submit their essays in English. The essays will be judged by a panel of teachers who will be looking for creativity, originality, and clarity of expression.
