A long vowel is a vowel sound that is pronounced the same way as the name of the letter. For example, the long U sound is pronounced like "yoo."
For A, E, I, & O also it will be the same Ate, Eagle, Item & Oak

The short U sound is pronounced more like "uh," as in words like "cub" "tub.
For A, E, I & O It will be Ant, Egg, Inn & Ox
