Wing Chun’s forms are not separate subjects. They are stages of the same lesson.

1. Siu Nim Tao teaches us how to build structure.
2. Chum Kiu teaches us how to move structure.
3. Bil Jee teaches us how to recover structure.

First establish the foundation. Then learn to maintain it while moving. Then learn to recover it when it’s broken.

The deeper you go into Wing Chun, the less it becomes about techniques and the more it becomes about understanding structure....

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is focusing on collecting techniques before building the structure that makes those techniques work.

Your stance, alignment, elbows, center, and ability to stay connected under pressure are the foundation.

Without that foundation, Wing Chun can become nothing more than a series of hand movements.

Build the structure first. The techniques will make a lot more sense afterward.

Tips for a proper Wing Chun horse stance (used for conditioning, not fighting): Knees and toes go in same direction, pointing towards your opponents centerline. Tuck the tailbone under to form a straight lower back. Keep the weight solidly in the feet and the heels down. As the old masters say, “You’re only as good as your horse”. 😉
