Bats are a critical but often overlooked part of western ecosystems. Tonight Dr. Riley Bernard, Assistant Professor of Zoology and Physiology at the University of Wyoming, joins us to share what collaborative research with natural resource managers is revealing about bat ecology across the region, and how that science is being translated into practical conservation tools.

Join us after Dr. Bernard’s seminar to watch bats get ready for their nightly foraging adventures. At dusk we will watch bats emerge from their roosts at AMK and discuss bat ecology and behavior with several of her graduate students. If interested, please bring a headlamp, light jacket and snacks as the bats are likely to emerge ~30 minutes after sunset.

Tomorrow night Dr. Riley Bernard, Associate Professor of Zoology and Physiology at the University of Wyoming, brings her applied wildlife ecology research to Berol Lodge. Her lab works directly with natural resource managers to better understand bats across the west, using spatial data to examine bat-habitat relationships while also investigating how human-driven change is affecting bat populations and behavior. Diet, parasitism, and heavy metal exposure round out a research program aimed at giving managers the science they need to make better conservation decisions.

Bats are a critical part of western ecosystems, but significant gaps remain in our understanding of how they interact with and are shaped by their environment. On August 6th, Dr. Riley Bernard, will share how her lab is working with natural resource managers to fill those gaps.

Her research covers bat-habitat relationships, the effects of anthropogenic change on bat populations and behavior, diet composition, parasitism, and heavy metal exposure. Together these threads add up to a fuller picture of the pressures bats face and what managers can do about it.

Tomorrow night Dr. Bryan Shuman joins us to present The Snake River Futures Report. At the University of Wyoming, Dr. Shuman has studied how past climate shifts have affected water and ecosystems across the Rocky Mountain region, and further, for nearly two decades. His recent work has examined wildfire and snowpack histories over past millennia, and he has played a central role in both the 2021 Greater Yellowstone Climate Assessment and the NSF-funded WyACT project.

His background makes him uniquely suited to discuss what the future holds for the Snake River watershed.

Dr. Bryan Shuman has spent his career using geological evidence to understand how past climate changes shaped water and ecosystems across North America. A professor and Wyoming Excellence Chair in Geology and Geophysics at the University of Wyoming, his work pulls from lake sediments, fossils, geophysics, and geochemistry to reconstruct millennia of climate history in the region. He co-led the 2021 Greater Yellowstone Climate Assessment and serves as a principal investigator on the NSF-funded WyACT project.

On July 30th he'll present The Snake River Futures Report, bringing that deep climate science background to one of the most consequential watersheds in the American West.
