The first Mobility & Movement practical seminar on Saturday was highly enjoyable.

Everyone showed improvements in their range of motion throughout the seminar after mobilising the joints and adding some light load to key areas of the lower body.

All things that will prove highly beneficial for both exercise (in and out of the gym) and general day to day quality of movement.

I shall be hosting an upper body focused practical seminar in the same format in the coming weeks.

Check back soon for date announcements!

Lessons from competitive weightlifting.

1. Competitions are like exams.
You can do all of the necessary prep work but ultimately comes down to your ability to perform on the day. Training in the gym and in competitive environments are vastly different. Having understanding and familiarity with the environment prior to the event is a big help.

2. Small changes have a big impact.
Replicating as much as you can during your final week of training before comp is very beneficial. Timed warm up sets, wearing singlet, taking the bag to the gym that you’ll use on the day, music, it all adds up.

3. Making weight.
Once you know your weigh in time, knowing how much you naturally weigh at that time is
Important. If you are hitting the exact weight for your class with no intake, this will be a big indicator that you’re better off waiting until after weigh-in to eat. If you have some wiggle room, you know you can afford to eat prior to weigh-in.

4. Egos and energy.
The warm up room is a fascinating place with a lot of different energies and egos. Some you’ll bounce off, others you won’t. Keep your head down and focus on you.

5. Enjoyment.
You’ve worked hard for months to get to this point, remember to pick your head up and have a blast. It’s often over before you know it.

Competitive weightlifting isn’t for everyone, but it’s certainly something I’ve fallen in love with.
Bring on the next one 👌🏻.

After a 14 month delay, the Plymouth Barbell competition finally took place and boy was it worth the wait. 🥈

Hit 5/6 and +11kg on my total with the following:
Sn**ch:
68KG ✅
71KG ✅
75KG ✅
A 5 kilo competition personal best.

Clean and jerk:
82KG ✅
87KG ✅
91KG ❌ - brain fart to power, surprised myself and then a slight press out on jerk, extremely happy nonetheless.

Regardless, this is a 6 kilo competition personal best plus 91kg is the highest I’ve ever cleaned (and je**ed with a comp technical fault).

A highly enjoyable experience all round.
Lovely to see so many familiar faces and thanks to everyone for the support! ❤️

Coaching and handling by Jesse Gilham 🤝👌🏻.

Certificate for the BTN Academy - Nutrition Education foundation nutrition course 🍎.

A very insightful and interesting course.
Would recommend to anyone that wants to level up their nutritional understanding.

This course explores the world beyond just nutrition and looks at a complete picture, of how factors such as hydration and sleep can impact your nutrition and decision making.

Ready to apply and practise everything I’ve learned 🙏🏻.

Client spotlight: Freyja-Catherine Hankins

Freyja started olympic lifting around 7 months ago (December 2020) and showed very strong promise from the very first session.

Yesterday, she worked up to a heavy single rep for both lifts from blocks at knee height.

Prior to todays session:
Sn**ch: 23kg
Clean and jerk: 35kg

Yesterdays top sets:
Sn**ch: 27kg (not filmed, 25kg video shown)
Clean and Jerk: 40kg.

Solid increases with both lifts with plenty to come.

Freyja has been consistently putting in the hard work behind the scenes since the gyms reopened in April.

Her constant pursuit of improvement is a big key to her progression.

7 months is a very short period of time in the olympic lifting world, especially when you consider nearly half of that time was in lockdown!

Very proud coach here.

Excited to see what the future holds, plenty more to come from Freyja!

A sn**ch PB day is always a good day 🤙🏻

Genuinely surprised myself with how solid this rep is at 75KG.

Matched my previous PB of 73KG for a power in the set before and thought I would give 75 a spin….. and I got it.

Absolutely buzzing.

Just over three weeks until comp 🙏🏻.

Fitness/training/recovery/sleep tracking gadgets.

Are they worth it?

There is a flock of various different wearable tracking products on the market.

Whilst the technology and approach may differ, they all boast fairly similar things: tracking of your exercise resulting in calories burned and some form of sleep/recovery tracking often thrown in.

Having an awareness of these things is massively important, however, are you relying on stats provided to you by gadget algorithms or are you genuinely in tune with what you need to succeed?

Purely and simply, I don’t need some heart rate monitoring gadget to tell me I’ve had a poor nights sleep.
I know I did.
It was me that did it.

The same goes for my performance and nutrition.

This is all before we even skim the surface with the accuracy of the data that’s recorded, along with the fact these gadgets are often only looking at certain parts of the picture.

Can these gadgets be helpful? Sure.
Should they be relied on? No.

Learning what your body needs and gaining an ability to self regulate is a far more valuable tool than something you can wear on your wrist, finger, chest, wherever.

Plus it’s a fair bit cheaper too.
