FIELD COURSE IN PRIMATE ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOR

INSTRUCTOR: Caitlin Hawley, Ph.D., Department of Environmental Science, Arizona State University, email: [email protected].
Specialty: Primate sociality, communication, ecology, evolutionary biology, behavior.

This course offer the student a foundation in primate ecology, primate behavior, field techniques and analytical tools in a tropical setting.

Students will live alongside wild primates, will learn ecological and behavioral data collection techniques, and will complete an independent study on one of three primate species native to the area.

The ultimate goal is for students to develop an integrated and comprehensive perspective on primate behavior, research, and conservation.

The material covered is equivalent to a university upper level field course in primate ecology.

ITEC courses include lectures, field exercises, and individual research.

Join our Tropical Biodiversity and Conservation Field Course at ITEC, running July 15th–August 10th.

This four-week summer field course offers a unique blend of academic learning and real-world adventure, placing you directly in the heart of tropical ecosystems. You won’t just study biodiversity—you’ll experience it firsthand.

This immersive, university-level field course combines academic study with hands-on adventure in Panama’s Caribbean rainforests and coral reefs. You’ll explore tropical ecosystems through fieldwork, lectures, and developing an independent research project, plus a three-day trip to mainland highland environments.

Gain real-world experience in biodiversity conservation, understand global environmental challenges, and develop practical research skills—all in one of the world’s richest natural settings.

By the end of the course, you’ll have built a strong foundation in biodiversity science and conservation strategies—along with valuable field research experience that sets you apart.
