The 8th meeting of the English-Medium Instruction in Higher Education Special Interest Group will take place online on 📅 18 September 2026, 🕐 11:00–12:30 CET.

💡 But what is the EMI SIG?

The UNIVERSEH EMI SIG brings together teachers, researchers, and administrative staff across the UNIVERSEH alliance who work in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) and English-Medium Education (EME).

🔷 It is a space to:
➤ Share experiences across disciplines and institutions
➤ Discuss challenges and solutions in EMI practice
➤ Explore teacher development, classroom strategies, multilingualism, and intercultural learning

🔷 The group is open to:
➤ University teachers delivering courses in English
➤ Staff supporting EMI/EME training and professional development
➤ Researchers interested in EMI/EME practices
➤ Anyone interested in multilingual and intercultural higher education

🌍 Meet-up 8 will focus on teaching and learning in English when both teachers and students use English as a foreign language.

➡️ Speaker: Katja Merkle Söderholm – lecturer at Luleå University of Technology with 30 years of experience in language teaching. She currently teaches Swedish and German as foreign languages.
➡️ Moderator: Anna Krukiewicz-Gacek, AGH University of Krakow

🔷 During the session, we will explore:

➤ The current status of teaching courses in English at Luleå University of Technology
➤ What happens when a teacher using English as a foreign language meets students who also mainly use English as a foreign language
➤ Challenges faced by both teachers and students in this kind of learning environment
➤ What teachers can do to make language learning as effective as possible
➤ Experiences, tips, questions, and practical solutions shared during the open discussion

We are excited to announce that the UNIVERSEH alliance has received funding under the EIT Higher Education Initiative 2025 through the SPACE-INNOVATE@UNI project, coordinated by AGH University of Krakow.

🔷 Selected as one of 35 projects funded across Europe, SPACE-INNOVATE@UNI will strengthen UNIVERSEH’s capacity to support innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration between universities, research institutions and industry.

The project aims to build a stronger innovation ecosystem across the alliance by:�✨ embedding entrepreneurship into education and curricula,�✨ supporting students, researchers and startups in transforming ideas into impactful solutions,�✨ creating new pathways for research valorisation and innovation development,�✨ connecting UNIVERSEH partners with European innovation networks and business ecosystems.

By combining expertise in space technologies, Earth observation, digital solutions and future technologies, SPACE-INNOVATE@UNI will help unlock the potential of space-driven innovation to address challenges on Earth — including climate resilience, sustainable food systems and digital transformation.

It is a Preparatory (Zero) Semester designed for non-engineering graduates, helping them gain the knowledge and skills needed to continue their education in the MSc in Space Technologies.

🎓 Do you have a non-engineering Bachelor's degree but dream of working in the space sector?

At AGH University of Krakow, you can still pursue an engineering Master's degree in Space Technologies!
Thanks to the Zero Semester, you can build the knowledge and skills needed to successfully transition into engineering studies.

🚀 What is the Zero Semester?
The Zero Semester is a preparatory programme designed for graduates of non-engineering Bachelor's programmes. It provides a solid foundation in key subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, and basic engineering, helping students prepare for the Master's programme in Space Technologies.
We believe that changing your educational and career path is possible – all it takes is curiosity, motivation, and determination.

👩‍🎓 Who is it for?
The programme is intended for graduates with a non-engineering Bachelor's degree who want to continue their education in the rapidly growing space sector.

🛰️ What's next?
After successfully completing the Zero Semester, students can continue their studies by choosing one of two specialisations:
🔹 Upstream – focused on the design, development, and operation of space systems and missions.
🔹 Downstream – focused on satellite data processing, applications, and communication with space-based systems.
