حسب الجمعية التونسية لدراسة العصر الرباعي (ATEQ) فإن الحفريات بالموقع الأحفوري بعميرة الفحول - المنستير تعود لعصر الميوسين العلوي (منذ 11.6 إلى 5.3 مليون سنة). يقع هذا النتوء في الجزء الغربي من الخريطة الجيولوجية للمهدية التي نشرها الديوان الوطني للمناجم.

Deep in the ancient sediments of Patagonia, Argentina, one of the most extraordinary discoveries in dinosaur science continues to reshape our understanding of prehistoric life. Scientists have documented a vast nesting site containing more than one hundred dinosaur eggs, with several preserving rare traces of embryos inside. This remarkable site is associated with titanosaurs, a group of giant long‑necked herbivorous dinosaurs that dominated South American landscapes during the Late Cretaceous period. The fossil beds reveal a carefully arranged cluster of eggs, suggesting that these massive dinosaurs returned repeatedly to specific nesting grounds — much like some modern reptiles and birds do today.

The preservation of embryonic material in some eggs is especially significant. It provides a direct glimpse into dinosaur development before hatching, offering clues about growth patterns, skeletal formation, and early life stages that are otherwise extremely difficult to study in the fossil record. Each preserved embryo acts like a biological snapshot from more than sixty million years ago. The density of eggs also suggests that titanosaurs may have nested in colonies, possibly to increase survival chances against predators in open floodplain environments. The surrounding geology indicates seasonal flooding conditions that may have influenced nesting timing and site selection.

Beyond its scientific importance, the discovery highlights how much of dinosaur life remains hidden beneath modern landscapes, waiting to be uncovered through careful excavation and study. Strange yet fascinating: some titanosaur eggs from Argentina show evidence of multiple nesting layers, meaning that the same location may have been used repeatedly across many generations — turning certain ancient floodplains into long‑term prehistoric nurseries. These giants did not simply lay eggs and leave. They returned to the same safe grounds, year after year, generation after generation, leaving behind a fossil record of parenting behavior that challenges the old image of dinosaurs as solitary, uncaring reptiles.

In 2022, Scientists Recovered DNA From a 2-Million-Year-Old Mammoth Tooth Found in Greenland Permafrost. It Is the Oldest DNA Ever Sequenced. It Rewrote the Mammoth Family Tree.

Before this discovery, the oldest confirmed ancient DNA was approximately 1 million years old. A 2022 paper in Nature extended that record to 2 million years, nearly doubling the confirmed range of DNA preservation.

The specimens: mastodon-like teeth from permafrost deposits at the Kap København Formation in Greenland. Three specimens — from three different animals. The DNA: extracted, sequenced, and compared to known mammoth lineages.

The findings upended the Woolly Mammoth's known evolutionary history:

The DNA revealed an entirely unknown mammoth lineage — now called the Krestovka mammoth — that was ancestral to the North American Columbian Mammoth. The Columbian Mammoth (the large, partially hairless mammoth of North America's warmer regions) was previously thought to be descended from steppe mammoths. The 2022 DNA shows it was instead a hybrid — Krestovka mammoth crossed with Woolly Mammoth.

A 2-million-year-old tooth revealed a previously unknown species AND corrected the evolutionary history of a species we thought we understood.

DNA preservation at 2 million years is only possible in permafrost — continuous freezing since deposition. Global warming is thawing permafrost globally. As it thaws: ancient DNA is destroyed before it can be recovered.

We are losing biological archives faster than we can read them.

If permafrost is the library of ancient DNA — and permafrost is thawing — what is the urgency of reading it before it's gone?

What began as the rumble of bulldozers and the clatter of construction in southwestern China quickly became something far more extraordinary—a discovery that would send shockwaves through the world of paleontology. Buried beneath layers of rock and time, workers stumbled upon bones so massive, so ancient, that they could only belong to one of the most magnificent creatures to ever walk the Earth. Meet Tongnanlong zhimingi, a newly identified species of sauropod dinosaur that stretched an astonishing 92 feet from head to tail, a true giant that roamed the lush wetlands of the Late Jurassic nearly 147 million years ago.

Unearthed at a construction site in Chongqing’s Tongnan District, this fossilized giant was embedded in the Suining Formation, a geological treasure trove that has preserved an entire ancient world beneath modern soil. Though the skeleton was incomplete—comprising several vertebrae, parts of the shoulder, and limb bones—the fragments were enough for scientists to confidently estimate its colossal size. Even at the lower end of projections, Tongnanlong ranks among the longest terrestrial animals ever discovered, challenging previous assumptions about just how massive dinosaurs could become.

Tongnanlong belongs to the Mamenchisauridae family, a group of sauropods known for their extraordinarily long necks and surprisingly lightweight skeletal designs. These dinosaurs evolved hollow, air-filled cavities in their bones—similar in some ways to birds today—that reduced overall mass without sacrificing strength. It was a brilliant evolutionary solution that allowed them to support bodies the size of multiple buses while still moving through their environment with purpose. This anatomical innovation is now recognized as one of the key adaptations that enabled sauropods to achieve such staggering proportions.

But Tongnanlong wasn’t just big—it was part of a much larger story. The Suining Formation preserves evidence of a vibrant Jurassic ecosystem: ripple marks in ancient sediments, fossils of freshwater organisms, and plant debris all point to a lakeshore environment teeming with life. Towering vegetation and abundant water sources would have made this region an ideal buffet for plant-eating giants like Tongnanlong, explaining why so many massive sauropods have been found in these ancient rocks.

Perhaps most exciting is what this discovery reveals about the world these dinosaurs inhabited. For years, paleontologists debated whether East Asia was isolated during the Jurassic, cut off from other continents by seaways and barriers. But finds like Tongnanlong—sharing features with sauropods from Africa and elsewhere—suggest a far more connected planet than once believed. Dinosaurs, it seems, were travelers, their lineages spreading across ancient landscapes in ways we are only beginning to understand.

Here’s a strange and mind-bending fact to carry with you: some sauropods had necks so impossibly long that their hearts had to generate blood pressure high enough to reach their brains—a physiological feat that scientists still debate today. Imagine the power required to pump life through a body that could dwarf a swimming pool.

متى عرف الإنسان عن الدينصورات أول مرة ؟

لم ير أي انسان ديناصوراً حياً، الديناصورات حيوانات كانت تعيش في معظم مناطق العالم، غير أنها انقرضت في كل مكان قبل نحو خمسة وستين مليون عاماً. ويعتقد ان النوع الأول من الانسان ظهر قبل اقل من مليونين ونصف المليون سنة. لذا فان الديناصورات كانت منقرضة عند ظهور الانسان.

اننا نعرف عن الديناصورات من بقاياها. هذه البقـايا هي العظام، أما متفرقة او في هيكل عظمي، وآثار اقدامها في الحجر وطبقات جلودها في الحجر أيضاً، وبيوضها.

ثمة شيء من الشـك بخصوص التاريخ الذي اكتشمت فيه عظام الديناصورات. اما آثار اقدامها فقد عرفت قبل سنوات كثيرة، اذ شوهد هيكل عظمي لديناصور في هادونفليد، نيوجرسي، نحـو نهاية القـرن الثامن عشر.

اما العظام التي ماتزال موجودة لفحصها وتشخيصها فقد اكتشفت في انكلترا. وجدت مجموعة منها ســنة ١٨٢٢ وهي الآن في المتحـف البريطاني للتاريخ الطبيعي في لندن. وقد وجدت مجموعة أخرى من عظام الديناصور في الوقت نفسـه تقريباً، وكانت الاساس للوصف العلمي الأول لأي ديناصور. كان ذلك في سنة ١٨٢٤، من قبل احد أساتذة جامعة أوكسفورد.

لذا ترى ان الانسان اكتشف الديناصور في وقـت قـريب جداً. وقـد وجدت نماذج من الديناصورات باعداد كبيرة في الولايات المتحدة وكندا والارجنتين والبرازيل والهند وافريقيا واستراليا ومنغوليا والصين وفرنسا، والمانيا والبرتغال والاتحـاد السوفيتي. ويدل ذلك على أن الديناصوات عاشت فعلا في جميع انحاء العالم.
