Hello! I am Megan Stapelberg, a 29 year-old South African, who has been living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands for the past 4 years. I am a proud Capetonian and love to tell any European who is willing to listen that South Africa is a must to add to their traveling bucket list! When I moved to Amsterdam 4 years ago, I had a teaching degree and an Honours degree in Educational Psychology.
My dream was to complete my Master's degree in Psychology in the Netherlands! My dream came true and I was able to study my Masters degree in Counseling Psychology at Webster University, Leiden. I graduated in May 2022, fulfilling a 10-year dream to be a qualified psychologist! While studying, I also worked (and continue to work) as a Learning Diversity Specialist at an international school in Amsterdam. This role allows me to support students with various learning difficulties to access the learning in the classroom and be independent learners.
This work, along with my Masters thesis' research into understanding the emotional needs of Third Culture Kids' needs in the international school environment, has fueled my fire to move in the direction of working as child psychologist with expat children in Amsterdam. I plan to collaborate with the South African embassy in The Hague to see how we can work together to support South African expat families who transition to the Netherlands.
