Mushrooms, murder....BETRAYAL! Last night Dr. Myhre took us on a wild ride through the mountains of Oaxaca.

Gordon Wasson walked into Maria Sabina's sacred ceremony, took notes, and ran straight to Life magazine. What followed was an avalanche of tourists, the destruction of her community, and a betrayal that mycologists are still fuming about decades later.

Dr. Myhre had us equal parts fascinated, outraged, and grateful for the telling of this beautiful woman's tragic history.

Just a reminder that we are on break June-August. Keep checking SIMA's calendar for any special events.

The annual spring foray this year was such an educational experience and an extremely fun time for everyone who attended! Featuring Britt Bunyard as the leading foray mycologist, members learned lots from him about mushrooms in general as well as a bit about predatory fungi.

During the foray, nearly 80 species of fungi were identified! Keep up the amazing work, everyone!

We can't wait to see you all at the upcoming fall foray. Until next time, foragers!

Happy Spring Foray Day!

Whether your hunting with SIMA today at our annual Spring foray or on your own, good luck to everyone in the field today. Stay safe, have fun, and don't forget to take plenty of photos along the way!

A quick mycology tip: when you find a mushroom, note the trees growing nearby. Many fungi form relationships with specific tree species, making habitat one of the best identification clues.

Have a great day and may the mushroom odds be ever in your favor!

Exciting News for SIMA!

The Southern Idaho Mushroom Association is thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a scholarship to attend the North American Mycological Association Annual Foray 2026 — NAMA Yoop!

The event will take place in beautiful Marquette, Michigan, and includes full registration, room, and board for one selected club member.

We are also excited to share that SIMA club member and Treasurer, Doug Rudeen, has been nominated to receive this scholarship and represent our club at the foray. In the words of Laura Lawson, "Doug has provided many important services for the club. He worked tirelessly on the Sheldrake event dealing with tax, registration, the website, and a host of other details. We've relied on Doug for too many things to name over the past year as we've expanded the club and its activities. I don't think Doug has ever been on a foray, despite all the time he devotes to SIMA."

We are incredibly honored to be recognized by NAMA and grateful for this amazing opportunity to connect with fellow mushroom enthusiasts, learn from experts, and represent Southern Idaho at one of the premier mycological events in North America.

Thank you to the North American Mycological Association and the Club Relations Committee for this generous scholarship and support of mushroom clubs across the country.

50 YEARS OF FUN, FUNGI, & COMMUNITY!

Wow, what an absolutely incredible year it’s been for SIMA! As we wrap up an unforgettable season, we want to look back and celebrate the amazing milestones, memories, and magic we shared together this year.

Not only did we hit our monumental 50th Anniversary as a club (half a century of foraging together!), but we also packed the calendar with some truly legendary events:

Merlin Sheldrake in Town: Having the brilliant author of Entangled Life join us was an absolute dream come true for our fungal community.

"Follow the Rain" Screening: We gathered to watch this stunning documentary and left feeling more inspired by the fungal kingdom than ever.

Leveling Up Our Skills: From getting up close and personal in our Microscopy Class to sharpening our foraging eyes in our Identification Class, our members took their citizen science to the next level.

Christmas Potluck: We celebrated the New Year the best way we know how—with great company, laughter, and a feast of delicious dishes.

Thank you to every single member, volunteer, and curious mind who made our 50th year so deeply special. Here’s to the next 50 years of learning, exploring, and celebrating the underground network that connects us all!
