The ASPRS Fellow Award Committee is now requesting nominations for the Fellow Award.

This is one of the highest professional achievement awards bestowed by ASPRS. Any member may submit a nomination with the exception of ASPRS Officers. (Per the Award deed, ASPRS Officers may not submit nominations)

Background information about the award is listed on the website, but the bottom line is we need a 1-2 page nominating document by October 2, 2026. The Award(s) will be presented at the ASPRS Annual Meeting in 2027.

Meet the Vice President of ASPRS: Hank Theiss

🌟I have been working in the geospatial industry for 30 years, beginning as a Research Assistant and then Visiting Assistant Professor at Purdue University, later as a defense contractor in the DC metro area, and now as a Research Associate Professor at the University of Arkansas, where I specialize in photogrammetry, data adjustment, error propagation, EO/IR/SAR/lidar sensor modeling from airborne and spaceborne platforms, image formation, close range applications, registration, and exploitation tool validation.

On a personal note, my wife and I ride tandem bicycles, both locally as well as part of destination vacations. We enjoy living in bicycle-friendly Northwest Arkansas, which has so much to offer in not only road but also gravel and mountain biking, as well as hiking and kayaking.

GIS Tips & Tricks – Authoritative Elevation Data? By Al Karlin


👉 Among the first things that entry-level GIS analysts learn when tasked with performing analyses and making maps, is the importance of data, what type is needed and where it can be found. Sometimes, finding the authoritative data source (ADS), i.e., a recognized, trusted, and official repository of information serving as the primary source for a specific data element, can be a bit tricky and often confusing. With so many open-source GIS data repositories available, such as OpenStreetMap, Natural Earth, EarthExplorer, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World, and the list goes on and on, a beginning GIS analyst can quickly become overwhelmed. To add to the volume of sources, there are additional federal, state, state agency, and local government GIS data portals that can provide data.

Meet the President Elect of ASPRS: Steven Steinberg, Ph.D., MPA, GISP, GeoEdC

🌟I have been working in the industry for over 30 years, first as a professor and more recently in local government where I serve as the Geospatial Information Officer (GIO) and Director of our Regional Imagery Consortium.

As an ASPRS member for over 30 years, I’ve served in a variety of roles at both the regional and association level. I particularly look forward to continuing to work with our students and young professionals as we look forward to the next generation of ASPRS professionals.

On a personal note, I met my wife because of GIS and I am a music fanatic, with a collection of over 1000 physical media ranging the musical gamut, classical through modern. I am also a hobbyist musician (primarily strings) and the proud owner/designer of perhaps the world’s first and only GIStar – a custom electric guitar with a GIS map on the body showing the origin of the reclaimed woods used to build it.
