World Giraffe Day was celebrated on Sunday, 21 June 2026. Two students at our school are researching giraffes, funded by the Anne Innis Dagg Foundation and supervised by Prof Colleen Downs. The foundation is in honour of Anne Christine Innis Dagg, who was a Canadian zoologist and the world's first giraffologist. She was an author of many books and a feminist who challenged gender bias in academia. A documentary about her will be screened on the Carbis Road campus on 30 July 2026 at 17h00. Her daughter, Mary Dagg, will be attending and speaking about her mother. All are welcome to attend, and entry is free.

The Pietermaritzburg support staff from the School of Agriculture and Science on the Carbis Road Campus held a social event on 18 June 2026. Matthew Erasmus shared his passion for calligraphy, teaching others about the history and the art of it. Handwriting is a skill that can be improved, and in our digital age, we can all benefit from the tactile feedback of pen-to-paper. It can be therapeutic and neuroprotective to journal your thoughts with pen and paper, use your fine motor skills, and create art. Calligraphy is one way to do all three of these at the same time.
