The School of Energy and Environment (SEE) successfully hosted the National Ecology Day 2026 cm SEE Tech Talk at City University of Hong Kong on 29 August 2026, centered on Climate Change and Sustainable Development!

Prof. Edwin Tso, Associate Dean (Internationalisation and Outreach), welcomed distinguished guests including Founding Dean Prof. Johnny Chan and Ir Dr. Otto P**n. He highlighted the implementation of the National Ecological and Environmental Code on 15 August 2026 and Hong Kongโ€™s strategic alignment with the National 15th Five-Year Plan, stressing the need for cross-sector GBA collaboration to tackle extreme weather.

On 21 August 2026, the School of Energy and Environment (SEE) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) organized a day trip to Dongguan, connecting faculty, staff, researchers, students, and alumni with world-class facilities in the Greater Bay Area (GBA).
Led by Dean Prof. Benjamin Horton, the delegation engaged in meaningful exchanges and visited key research hubs:

๐Ÿ“ CityUHK (Dongguan) Campus: Warmly received by Prof. Julie Li, Vice President (Academic) of CityUHK (Dongguan), Prof. Xingyi Shi, Assistant Professor and Programme Coordinator, and their team, delegates explored the universityโ€™s strategic vision, campus developments, and state-of-the-art facilities.
๐Ÿ“ Chinese Academy of Sciences Dongguan Institute of Materials Science: Met with Prof. Liu Lifeng for an insightful exchange on advanced materials development.
๐Ÿ“ China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS): Guided by Mr. Guo, the team explored one of Chinaโ€™s major national scientific infrastructure facilities supporting multidisciplinary scientific discovery.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Breakthrough in Passive Cooling: Professor Chi Yan Tso and his research team at the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), City University of Hong Kong, have published pioneering research on deep subambient radiative cooling in Energy & Environmental Science!

Conventional cooling materials struggle with parasitic environmental heat gainโ€”which in Hong Kong can exceed 70 W mโปยฒ and drain half of the potential cooling power. To solve this, the team developed a novel White Infrared-Transparent Aerogel (WITA) that decouples solar reflection from thermal emission.

Key Achievements:

- High Efficiency: 96.6% solar reflectance and up to 94.5% atmospheric-window transmittance.

- Superior Cooling: Outperforms existing SDRC emitters by over 5.2 ยฐC in real-world outdoor tests.

- Energy Savings: Delivers ~55% greater annual cooling-energy savings in hot climates.

- Practical Features: Flame-retardant, UV-durable, hydrophobic, and customizable with tunable coloration.

๐ŸŒฟ CityUHK Academics Attend National Ecology Day 2026 Launching Ceremony

On 15 August 2026, Professor Kenneth Leung, BBS, JP, Vice-President (Research), and Professor Edwin Tso, Associate Dean (Internationalisation and Outreach) of the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), represented CityUHK at the National Ecology Day 2026 Launching Ceremony cm Symposium at the Hong Kong Science Museum. ๐Ÿ›๏ธโœจ

The launching ceremony was officiated by Mr Cheuk Wing-hing, Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration; Mr Tse Chin-wan, Secretary for Environment and Ecology; Mr Ye Shuiqiu, Deputy Director-General of the Social Development Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; and Dr Starry Lee, Member of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress and President of the Legislative Council.

The event brought together experts, scholars, and officials to discuss ecological conservation and mark the start of a month-long series of environmental initiatives across Hong Kong. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’ก
