The MOME Center for Research took part in the 2026 China-CEEC Conference on Innovation Cooperation in Ningbo and Nanjing. Lead researcher Ágnes-Karolina Bakk spoke to more than 300 delegates about human-centred and more-than-human approaches to technology: AI can augment our senses but also diminish them, while VR can act as a small laboratory for understanding ourselves and the medium. Thank you to the organisers for the warm hospitality.

We’re exhibiting at Circular Economy Hotspot Budapest 2026!

What happens when waste becomes a starting point for new materials, new practices and new ways of thinking?

At the exhibition, MOME will present three projects exploring circular approaches from different perspectives:

COMPO — invasive plants as a resource for natural textile dyes

Coffee Chaff — turning coffee industry waste into biocomposite building elements

MOME ZACC — exploring how coffee grounds can spark circular thinking and collective action

Come meet us in Budapest and discover the projects in person.

As part of her postdoctoral research, Apol Temesi investigates the pigment content of invasive and non-native plant species.

This year, with the support of the Eötvös Scholarship, she spent three months in England, studying 30 ecologically problematic species across 15 locations.

Her research explores how these plants can become sources of regenerative pigments, while contributing to the development of more chemical-free practices in the textile industry.

The research results will be presented in a solo exhibition in Ljubljana this autumn.

This summer, the FRUSKA project team hit the road again!

Led by Janka Csernák under the Social and Action Lab, the FRUSKA project delivers interdisciplinary design workshops to disadvantaged young girls in areas with limited access to creative development programs.
For the second year in a row, the team hopped into the specially transformed mobile workshop bus to deliver hands-on creative workshops across rural Hungary.

With the support of the Tanoda platform, this summer we hosted interactive sessions in Jászberény and Bátonyterenye (collaborating across three Tanodas at once!).

FRUSKA is an interdisciplinary design initiative designed to empower disadvantaged young girls. By bringing a mobile workshop directly to communities where access to creative and design education is often limited, we create spaces for hands-on making, spatial thinking, and personal customization.

Beyond learning design skills, these sessions help young girls strengthen their self-awareness, technical confidence, and social capabilities - building long-term opportunities for their futures.

Grateful to the participants, our partners, and the entire team who made this summer’s journey possible!

MOME Budapest's COMPO course was featured at the Gentler Futures Festival in Lisbon, an international platform exploring ecological, regenerative, and material futures through design and research. The festival was organized by By the End of May.

Our exhibition presented 100 textile samples developed through a multi-semester course led by Apol Temesi DLA, investigating the pigmentation potential of invasive plant species such as Goldenrod and Japanese Knotweed.

Through harvesting, pigment extraction, fermentation, and natural dyeing techniques, students explored how ecological challenges can become opportunities for regenerative material practices.

The installation, co-developed with researcher Gergely Tasnádi and the festival team, followed circular design principles using natural, biodegradable, waste-derived, and rented materials.

A valuable opportunity to connect MOME’s educational and research activities with an international community working towards ecosystem regeneration.

We're delighted to share that HVG Pulzus has published a detailed feature on the ZenctuaryVR+ project.

The Future Care Lab's research explores an important question: What can a virtual natural environment offer an older person who has been looking at the same hospital ceiling for weeks? During prolonged hospital stays, it is not only the body that becomes exhausted—attention narrows, and the sense of control gradually weakens. Our research investigates how a carefully designed VR experience, developed and evaluated with psychologists and healthcare professionals, may help address these challenges.

Many thanks to Krisztina Soltész for her thoughtful and accurate article, based on her conversation with the project's lead, Ágnes-Karolina Bakk

The project is led by the MOME Budapest Future Care Lab in partnership with Semmelweis University, Szegedi Tudományegyetem - University of Szeged Université de Strasbourg, and the University of York, with support from the NKFIH - Nemzeti Kutatási, Fejlesztési és Innovációs Hivatal Hu-rizont funding programme.

📖 The article is partly behind a paywall and is available in Hungarian only.

Mit jelenthet egy virtuális erdő annak, aki hetek óta ugyanazt a kórházi plafont nézi?

A lot has happened since we last shared updates here.

One of the biggest changes is our new name. Formerly known as the Innovation Center, we are now the Center for Research at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME Budapest). While our name has changed, our commitment to design-driven research and interdisciplinary collaboration remains stronger than ever.

Over the past year, our team has evolved, our research has expanded, and we've continued working across four research labs:

🌿 Ecology & Action
💙 Future Care
🏛️ Heritage & Motion
🤝 Society & Action

Together, these themes have shaped our projects, collaborations, publications, and contributions to international conferences. We've also had the opportunity to work with academic, industry, and NGO partners, connecting research with real-world impact.

In the coming weeks, we'll be sharing more about our ongoing projects, our researchers, and the ideas that drive our work.

We're happy to have you with us.
