One of my favorite coaching vids 🇵🇭

It first starts with mindset. Especially when it's your first time working with a player like it was with Andres Lacson, OF for De La Salle University in the Philippines

The first question I asked him was "what kind of hitter are you?"

He said "Contact and singles guy"...I said BROOOO. Those are limiting words. He says that because that's what others say he should be. Because his physique doesn't scream power. But guess what?

Same with Corbin Carroll. 31 HR last year. Same with Mookie Betts - 39 HR a few years ago. If Brice Turang forever stayed attached to being a line drive hitter because he's one of the fastest players in the league, he'd be withholding his ability to hit for extra bases and help himself and the team more...

So biggest thing a coach can do for a player like this is open up their mind. Power is not physique and rotational power alone. It's bat path, tension, and belief.

Now when I say this, people like to make assumptions and jump to the conclusion of oh he's a launch angle guy, he's too new school, blah blah blah. No, I try only to use logic. Logically, balls hit with the ability to clear the infield have more potential for extra bases. Extra bases are good. Coaches love to make players use their speed to beat out outs and make them hits. I like to make players use their speed to turn base hits into extra base hits.

Coaches and mentors of any capacity are meant to remove any limits on players. But a lot of a time, we see coaches limit players. Now...this is all to an extent. Andres' should still play to these strengths of contact and spraying the ball, but I want him and all hitters to be more aggressive in leverage counts. When it becomes a pitcher's count (2-strikes), perhaps the approach can revert more to these contact tools.

But overall, I really believe this. This is what I needed as a high school player. Would've removed the limits I had on myself.

Along with this Play Baseball bat, I was able to bring a bag full of 37 bats thanks to my family's support. I was able to distribute them all to all the teams from around the country at the Babe Ruth Philippines National Tournament 🇵🇭

Direction. So underrated and emphasized more as you get more advanced. Simply, this is how the bat travel through the zone. Across? Bad. Through? Good. All controlled by front shoulder

Tension. The unlocking factor in baseball. Guys that use their body better create tension better. Better tension means greater power output by creating greater...

Bat speed. One of the main factors that teams are trying to emphasize at the professional level. The Red Sox whole developmental process has bat speed improvement as one of the focal points. Many other organization are chasing this, too.

The faster you learn and refine this, the better you'll be!

Read for better jumps ⤵️

Btw, there are plenty of MLB base stealers that are more in-line and don't "Cheat" with an open foot. THey still have a "kickstart" type of motion where the lead foot opens up. It's just my opinion (and what I've seen as an advantage from others) that an open foot can just make your jumps cleaner with less movement

This is a tip for you to share with your kid, but if they do need new cleats or gear in general, I used to snag mine from Play Baseball because they usually have the gear I want at a number that my parents would say yes to lol. Bro had 3 HR 1st 3 seasons, then...

He learned to have a better relationship with the ground. Of course he physically matured a bit and his approach matured into more of a do-damage swing

But we can definitely learn how hitters create a forward move, sink into their legs as their stride strikes, and using that momentum into our rotation!
