My dear Don Michael,

I have just learned that you are no longer with us. I cannot believe that I will never speak with you again. The thought feels unreal, almost impossible to accept.

You have been one of the sweetest and most honorable people I have ever known in my life. Of all the many things we talked about in our classes, what always touched me most was the deep love you had for your wife. You would so often tell me how much you missed her whenever you had to be away from her for even a few days. I would always answer that I hoped one day I might find someone like you.

I know that with your characteristic wisdom you would tell me not to cry — that death is part of life, and that you lived a full and beautiful one. But the truth is, it hurts to know that we will never speak again.

I promise you I will only cry for a little while. After that, I will take refuge in gratitude — gratitude that our paths crossed, that we were able to meet, that I was fortunate enough to know you.

Thank you for being part of my life.
