N is for Nature Play

I’ve spent over 25 years designing outdoor spaces for children—and I’ve seen over and over again how a child’s environment can either lift them up or quietly work against them.

What keeps me going is this simple belief: every child deserves a space that meets them where they are.
For kids who feel the world more deeply—who notice every sound, texture, or flicker of light—their home or backyard can either feel like chaos or calm. I help families and educators create spaces that support kids’ nervous systems, reduce anxiety, and nurture connection.

Because when a child feels safe in their environment, they flourish in every other part of life. 🌿✨

Ribbon-cutting day for a design project dear to my heart, the Wulan Mar Playscape at Family Promise of Spokane!

It took 14 months to take this project from a uninviting space to a fun, safe space for the children living at the homeless shelter.

The sweetest part of my morning was sharing this with my own kids. They got to see the "before" at the groundbreaking ceremony last year and the "after" today.

Thanks to Joe Ader, Toni Burke, Emma Hughes, Jack Harper, Jeremy D'Angelo, and the other staff, Board, and volunteers with Family Promise for making this project so incredibly special and successful!

And, thanks to Grant Keller and Terrabella, Inc. for making another of my projects a reality. You're the best!

Whether you’re new to the N is for Nature Play community, or if you’ve been with me for a while, I wanted to tell you that I’m so thrilled you’re here!

🌼With a flush of new folks in the community, I wanted to take a moment to (re)introduce myself!🌼

I'm Jena, the creator of N is for Nature Play, and I'm passionate about designing sensory-based, nature-filled play and learning spaces for kids of all ages, abilities, and (neuro)diversities.

I’m a landscape architect with a deep love for nature and a fascination with how children interact with their environment. As a designer, I realized that traditional play spaces often overlooked the unique sensory needs of many children. I wanted to change that. I believe every child deserves a space where they feel safe, supported, inspired, and celebrated for who they are. It’s about creating environments that truly “speak” to their nervous systems.

🌈At N is for Nature Play, I design custom play and learning spaces that are rich in sensory experiences and tailored to children’s sensory profile. I also provide online programs and in-person workshops to help parents and teachers understand their children's sensory needs and create supportive environments. Whether it's a backyard garden designed for sensory regulation, or a play yard transformed into a nature-infused learning hub, I focus on creating spaces that foster play, learning, connection, and holistic development.

If you're a parent or teacher of a child with neurodiversities, you know how important it is to create environments that support their unique needs so they can relax, focus, and do what fills their hearts with joy.
