I never thought that chance would have it that I meet Barbadian Historian and prolific author Prof. Sir. Hilary Beckles in the most unexpected of places. Introduced to his co-authored books when I did CAPE History (c. 2006), I had to acknowledge him. We had a little laugh and chat, I thanked him for his invaluable contributions to the subject that I love. He pleasantly also entertained my 'wefie' request📸🙈

PS. I met Prof. Verene Shepherd once but I did not get to chat with her.

This one thing frustrated me at my time at UWI, St. Augustine. Students would hide books in the Alma Jordan Library. History, as well as other books were rare and few and the ones that were available, some students would remove them from their location and hide on other floors. This would really get to me. Most times students would borrow the main texts, not use them and return at the end of the semester. The power of having and the foolery of not using. It was so bad in my first year, it resulted in me using my CAPE texts to complete an assignment and you could imagine my grade😓.

Yes, there were reference books but even that excluded persons like me, who did not belong to the Book Rotation Club.

All this to say, if I could, I would do my undergrad years over. But I'm more thankful that I can purchase my own books for the Annaleah Francis Library.😉📖📚

Ps. I worked in a library before I started UWI.

Although, I believe the removal of the 3 Spanish Ships from our Coat of Arms is a good idea (those ships represent the beginning of destructive colonization) it will be at a great cost to the country. Currency and every form of insignia $$$$$.

If and when it is removed, the Steelpan is the most and only suitable replacement. It is our national instrument, created in Trinidad and Tobago by Trinbagonians.

Other instruments such as Tassa, African drums, Harmonium, Tambrin from Tobago are dear to our soul but they are all modified instruments of our various Ancestral origins. T&T is made up of Diasporic Africans, Indians, Chinese, Syrian, Portuguese etc. What we know is a mixture of our first ancestral origin, our colonizers and now globalization.

The Coat of Arms should represent Trinidad and Tobago and Trinidad and Tobago is Steelpan, whether you like the instrument or not.

Learning History is one side of the coin, teaching it is another.

I find myself in the classroom teaching 👩‍🏫children how to spell, pronounce words, read and use words and I wonder if I should have been an English teacher. The subject of History can not be fully appreciated in any language (at least to me) if the respective rules of language are not known. Language is used to communicate thought and experience.

Now I profess to be no 'English Buff'💪 because I have had my fair share of writing challenges but I aspire to be better. I aim to learn and refresh my knowledge on the fundamentals of the English Language, all in an effort to improve my delivery of the most foundational subject of all time... History📖

No generation can exist intellectually without the efforts of their predecessors. Knowledge grows and changes but it stands upon something gone before, whether fact or fiction.
