What moved the markets last week?

From a stronger US Dollar and USD/JPY holding near multi-year highs, to Australia's cooling inflation, steady US Core PCE, and a sharp Nasdaq sell-off, last week delivered plenty of market-moving events.

The S&P 500 has a 95% win rate in July.

Over the past 20 years, price has moved higher 19 times during this period.
The only exception? The 2008 financial crisis.

On average, the move is around +3.1%.
That’s a meaningful move for any trader.

Right now, price is approaching a key support at 7,350.
This level lines up with the 50-day moving average and previous lows.

If price holds and momentum shifts bullish,
this seasonal pattern could be about to play out again.

If it breaks lower, watch 7,123 as the next key level.

Seasonality gives the bias.
Price action gives the confirmation.

⚖️ Gold prices dropped over 3% on Friday after the NFP reports despite climbing geopolitical tensions…why?

The key driver behind gold prices isn’t fear, but the jump in US bond yields. You see when US yields rise, investors prefer to park their capital in US treasuries vs gold which is a non-yielding asset.

NFP coming in stronger just pushed out the narrative of AI destroying the jobs market. Well for this print anyway. So, stronger jobs, higher inflation and stronger growth outlooks. That is an environment where a central bank looks to hike rates. Which is what the bond market is beginning to price in.

So as a trader trading gold. Your first stop should be the bond market. If US bonds rise, then gold prices tend to fall. As bonds fall, then gold prices tend to rise.

Most traders watch price. Smart traders also watch fear. 🌋

The VIX, often called the market’s “fear gauge,” reflects how much volatility options traders expect over the next 30 days. When uncertainty rises, demand for protection increases, and so does the VIX.

Here’s how many investors interpret it:

1. Lower readings often signal confidence and stable market conditions.
2. Elevated readings suggest growing uncertainty and risk aversion.
3. Extreme spikes can indicate widespread panic, where fear may already be heavily reflected in asset prices.

That doesn’t mean a high VIX automatically marks a market bottom. Fear can persist longer than expected. But periods of extreme volatility often become moments when disciplined investors start looking for opportunities rather than reacting emotionally.

The key takeaway: VIX is best used as a sentiment indicator, not a buy or sell button. Would you view a VIX spike as a warning sign or a potential opportunity?
