Serranos are small members of the sea bass family and are closely associated with rocky reef habitats. Up close, you can really appreciate just how much character these little reef fish have.

🐟🌊 Two reef schools, one incredible scene.

A large school of goatfish gathers over the reef alongside a separate school of sergeant majors.

The colorful contrast makes this a beautiful snapshot of reef life. Goatfish use their sensitive barbels to search among the reef for small prey, while the unmistakable black-and-yellow sergeant majors add another layer of activity to the scene.

Every reef has its own community—and there's always something happening beneath the surface.

A school of graybar grunts moves gracefully across the reef, constantly shifting and turning together as they navigate their underwater world.

🐟🌊 The reef disappears beneath a living wall of fish.

A huge school of chubs moves across the reef, creating an incredible display of synchronized movement and shimmering scales.

Large schools like this are one of the great spectacles of reef diving. Thousands of individual fish move together, constantly changing direction while staying remarkably coordinated.

The ocean is always moving—and sometimes the reef moves with it.

😳🐍 Those aren't all the teeth!

Take a close look at this green moray eel's mouth and you'll notice something unusual: morays have a second set of jaws hidden deeper inside their throat.

These are called pharyngeal jaws. When a moray catches prey, the inner jaws move forward, grab it, and pull it deeper toward the throat. This allows the eel to swallow prey despite having a body and mouth structure that isn't designed for conventional suction feeding.

A terrifying-looking feature with an incredibly clever function. Nature is full of engineering we don't expect. 🌊

👀🐟 Sometimes you have to look twice.

Hidden among the rocks, this Pacific mutton hamlet was keeping a low profile on the reef.

Hamlets are small reef predators related to groupers, and their secretive behavior makes finding one tucked into the reef a special little discovery. The underwater world is full of creatures that can disappear right in front of you if you aren't paying attention.
