My heart just broke upon reading that in the new University funding model, teachers, who are regarded as public/civil servants, have been put in the same band as their political counterparts.

Surely!! What kind of injustice is this to teachers? This is unacceptable.

Teachers on my timeline from Kenya, please outline other reasons for striking so that the public can understand...

Sometimes, the public is hostile to teachers because it is felt that our children "suffer" when the teachers strike. But putting feelings aside and empathising with them, I understand why they should be listened to.

As a Republic, Kenya has been very unkind, hostile and downright without empathy towards teachers... We should try to make it right by listening to them... Sometimes, making someone feel heard is the first step in addressing their pain...

As a young person, and especially if you do not come from wealth, you can not afford to bring out another lot of a directionless generation.

Listen, most our old guards only knew one thing; How to survive. They had no access to the type of information we now have access to. They failed in some quarters but brought us up the best way they knew how to.

Then came you. A modern soul that is to grasp the whole knowledge and change course.

If you do not succeed in being the FIRST to create this wealth, at least be the first to change the thought pattern of your lineage.

As a young person, deliberately put yourself in situations that will make you learn. Pay for that online course to acquire a skill that you can sell. Attend workshops. Interact with people from a point of ‘I wanna learn’. Stop going with the flow of those that have already lost hope. Do not inherit hatred for people you should be learning from. You only have you. And this world is so cruel to mediocrity.

Again, as a young person, go out of your way to be better.

THE NEW UNIVERSITY FUNDING MODEL BANDS EXPLAINED:

Band 1: For families with a monthly income up to Sh5,995

Band 2: For families with a monthly income up to Sh23,670

Band 3: For families with a monthly income up to Sh70,000

Band 4: For families with a monthly income up to Sh120,000

Band 5: For families with a monthly income above Sh120,000

FUNDING

BAND 1:
The government scholarship will cover 70%, the loan will cover 25%, making the total support 95%. The family will contribute 5%, and the upkeep loan will be Sh60,000.

BAND 2:
The government scholarship will cover 60%, the loan will cover 30%, making the total support 90%. The family will contribute 10%, and the upkeep loan will be Sh55,000.

BAND 3:
The government scholarship will cover 50%, the loan will cover 30%, making the total support 80%. The family will contribute 20%, and the upkeep loan will be Sh50,000.

BAND 4:
The government scholarship will cover 40%, the loan will cover 30%, making the total support 70%. The family will contribute 30%, and the upkeep loan will be Sh45,000.

BAND 5:
The government scholarship will cover 30%, the loan will cover 30%, making the total support 60%. The family will contribute 40%, and the upkeep loan will be Sh40,000.

When your friend(s) start drifting away, don't assume that they’re pretending to be busy. Adulthood is hard, people are going through a lot they don't talk about.

Don't be deceived by social media posts and status updates, people are crying to sleep, racking their brains to make ends meet.

These times are really hard and adulthood is really dealing with people back to back.

Just understand that life doesn’t revolve around anyone, and it's selfish to always expect people to be there whenever you need them forgetting they've got lives and they are human too.

I’d wish they said they are getting behind for such and such reason but reality is that most of the times, these are things that can’t just be discussed openly.

WE DESERVE OUR POLITICIANS

In the past, we have had Kenyans from various calibres vying for different political seats. I would follow with interest the journey of candidates with sound education and experience to see how far they would reach. Most of their journeys either never took off, or did not last long.

As someone who spent remarkable time as a resident of Mathare slums (Starehe Constituency) and works at Strathmore University in Madaraka, Nairobi County is of interest to me. And given my extended family's home, Kiambu County leadership and its management is important to me.

In Nairobi, we have had well experienced (established leaders in different organisations or businesses) and learned contenders like: Jimnah Mbaru, Miguna Miguna, Polycarp Igathe, Cleophas Mutua, Denis Ochieng' Kodhe, Kenneth Nyamwamu, Harman Singh Grewal, etc. All were unsuccessful or had short stints in politics. Kiambu County is no different.

Why am I writing about the leaders? My thoughts were ignited by a conversation about the "smartness" (or lack thereof) of Moses Kuria (former Trade CS). A huge percentage believes he's more in the "lack thereof" category given his public utterances. I beg to differ.

Moses Kuria the technocrat is NOT Moses Kuria the politician. You see, I have had the pleasure of sharing a table with Moses Kuria together with different industry players in the financial sector to discuss matters policies. That guy ain't stupid, and neither is he inexperienced nor unexposed. He asks very good questions (which is a better pointer of intelligence) and listens patiently with follow up questions if necessary; and his answers are usually well researched and articulated.

But he knows he cannot reveal this version of himself to Kenyans since we will shun him like we have done to so many others... Experience has shown that we do not appreciate those who expose their intelligence. Instead, we go for those who we think are average (or below average).

So, what Moses Kuria does, as a wise person, is give us what he thinks we want. An average drunkard with a foul mouth. Then he is labelled as an attack dog for his political bosses.

I wonder why we get surprised when most of these politicians do not know what they vote into law at both the National and County Assemblies. Or why some of our Senators don't understand basic Bills or their mandate. We have Governors who are just a bunch of jokers except a few, and we expect development 🙄... Kenyans joke too much 🤨...

We know the calibre of leaders we have been electing. And we DESERVE them and what they are dishing out to us.

We have seen, to our delight, that public agitation can actually yield positive results in matters of governance. So what's the way forward?

I'd recommend that we now shift our focus closer to us: county governments. Every county is allocated some money every year. It's not uncommon to see some counties spending less than 25% of the allocated funds, the rest going back to the treasury at the end of the financial year. This is very unfortunate.

The zeal with which we're asking for accountability and transparency from the national government should also be applied to the County Governments.

The Counties have already drawn their budgets and have Financial and Appropriation Bills. Do you know what your county has budgeted for? What are your County's appropriations? What do we want our MCAs to debate about that will bring development (policy-wise, social structures and physical infrastructure) to our County? Do you know where your County Assembly is located?

The County Assemblies and their role in service provision near us is something we have been overlooking for a long time. It's high time we put a spotlight on our MCAs.

National Product Development Competition 2024

Every year, Actuarial Science students all over the country are given an opportunity to develop a product for the financial sector. They can do this by creating an actual product or writing a research paper.

The Product Development Competitions (PDCs) which are a celebration of ingenuity and brilliance, are held all through the country and different regions. A commemoration of the winning products and research papers from the Regional PDCs is done through the National PDC.

This year, our theme: 'Redefining an Actuary', comes at a time where actuaries are branching out to other different areas. And are emerging as winners at pushing boundaries.

The National PDC will be held at The University of Nairobi, on the 4th and 5th of July, 2024.

In preparation of the creativity, Actuarial Students' Society of Kenya (ASSK) in partnership with Actuarial Academy East Africa (AAEA) and The Actuarial Society of Kenya (TASK) have organized a webinar to accentuate the innovation that will be witnessed on the most awaited day.
