Alliance Equity Discussion – “The Head Start Equity Academy” – 1/17/25
Join a group of peers and colleagues from the early childhood community to engage in sustained learning about anti-racism, equity, and inclusion. The Alliance hosts a monthly, salon-style Equity Discussion Group via Zoom. Our next session is coming up on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 1:00 pm.

The discussion will be led by Holly Moriglioni, the Children’s Services and Professional Development Manager at Champlain Valley Head Start. Our focus will be the Head Start Equity Academy, whose goal is to support Head Start Programs to incorporate an equity lens into all aspects of program planning and development and to establish a practice of continuous and systematic assessment.

All children have the right to equitable learning opportunities that help them achieve their full potential as engaged learners and valued members of society. Thus, all early childhood educators have a professional obligation to advance equity. They can do this best when they are effectively supported by the early learning settings in which they work and when they and their wider communities embrace diversity and full inclusion as strengths, uphold fundamental principles of fairness and justice, and work to eliminate structural inequities that limit equitable learning opportunities.

This position statement is one of five foundational documents NAEYC has developed in collaboration with the early childhood profession. With its specific focus on advancing equity in early childhood education.

Racial equity in early childhood education encompasses the following:

1. eliminating racial inequities related to access to high-quality early childhood programs
2. eliminating racial inequities within those programs, including the nationwide push out of students of color to the Cradle to Prison Pipeline
3. ensuring all children are engaged with pedagogies that affirm and promote their sense of self-worth from a racial and ethnic standpoint
4. challenging the Eurocentric nature of the curriculum by recognizing the history of colonizations that have silenced the heritage of particular groups of people
5. recognizing that young children are able to both recognize and speak out against racial discrimination absorbed in their social and cultural environments, as well as dismantle the construction of racism if they are explicitly taught how to do so by educators who intentionally take on issues of race and racism.
