The Department of Civil Engineering and the CSU - Department of Geology held an online collaborative meeting to discuss a proposed research initiative to advance liquefaction studies.

The meeting was initiated by Engr. Marc Lin F. Abonales, together with Ms. Yvonne T. Olayvar, and attended by Mr. Daniel Jose L. Buhay, Science Research Specialist II under the Geology and Geophysics Research and Development Division, along with members of the LiquePhi Project.

The discussion focused on the submitted concept proposal, which was endorsed for the development of a full-blown research proposal to be evaluated for possible DOST Grant-in-Aid (GIA) funding.

This initiative highlights the department's continued commitment to strengthening research collaboration, promoting innovation, and developing science-based solutions for disaster resilience and sustainable development.

Two BS Civil Engineering students emerged victorious during the Engineering and Geosciences Annual Research Summit (EGeARS) 2026 after winning the 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿, 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀, and 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀 awards under the 𝗠𝗦𝗗𝗘𝗚 (Methods and Systems Development in Engineering and Geosciences) thematic area.

Their study focuses on developing a GIS-based earthquake-induced landslide (EQIL) susceptibility model using the Frequency Ratio (FR) method and on assessing road network vulnerability in Makilala, North Cotabato.

After successfully dominating their thematic area, they will once again represent the MSDEG category in the 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 tomorrow!

Two DCE faculty members and six students actively participated in the Road Safety Month Celebration held on May 8, 2026, at Malvar Hall, Balanghai Hotel, Doongan, Butuan City, organized by the Butuan City Transportation and Traffic Management Department - CTTMD. The event featured a variety of engaging activities for participating college students, including the Road Safety Quiz Bowl, On-the-Spot Painting Contest, and the presentation of TikTok video entries highlighting road safety awareness and advocacy. These activities aimed to promote responsible road use, enhance public awareness on traffic safety, and encourage the active involvement of the youth in advocating for safer roads and communities.

Six BSCE students participated in the Quiz Bowl Competition, which assessed participants’ knowledge of traffic rules, road signs, and safe commuting practices. CSU Team 1 was composed of Abarico, Shekinah Griel A. (BSCE 3), Buquis, Ahrianna May M. (BSCE 3), Dandoy, Christian Elte R. (BSCE 3), Custan, Dana Nicole S. (BSCE 4), and Turaja, Jobilene Ten (BSCE 4). Meanwhile, CSU Team 2 was represented by Darunday, Harvey Kent T. (BSCE 4) together with four USG Officers.

The event was graced by the presence of Engr. Shelah Grace C. Hebra, Department Head, and Engr. Marc Lin F. Abonales, Associate Dean, who showed their support for the participating students and the advocacy for road safety awareness.

Despite the limited preparation time, CSU Team 1 delivered a commendable performance and successfully secured 4th Place in the competition.

The Department of Civil Engineering of Caraga State University strongly supports the Road Safety Month Celebration, as the department has a specialization in Transportation Engineering, which plays a crucial role in the planning, design, operation, and management of safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation systems. Through participation in events such as this, the department reinforces its commitment to promoting road safety awareness, responsible mobility practices, and the development of future engineers who can contribute to addressing traffic and transportation challenges in communities.

🏗️ Future Civil Engineers Take the Spotlight

The Department of Civil Engineering proudly presents the Final Thesis Oral Defense of its Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering students—an important academic milestone that highlights their research capability, technical competence, and commitment to addressing real-world challenges.

The presentations span the five major clusters of Civil Engineering: Construction Engineering and Management, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Water Resources Engineering. These studies reflect a strong integration of sustainability, innovation, and technology—ranging from advanced construction materials and infrastructure systems to disaster risk reduction, transportation planning, and water resource management.

📍 The sessions are open to a limited number of student observers (5 per session) and are open to all Civil Engineering students. Third-year students are especially encouraged to attend to gain valuable insight into the research process and how theoretical knowledge is applied to real-world engineering challenges.
