The History of Karbala centers on one of the most tragic and significant events in Islamic history: the Battle of Karbala, which took place in 680 CE (61 AH) in present-day Karbala, Iraq.

Background

After the death of Muʿāwiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, the Umayyad ruler, his son Yazid ibn Muʿāwiyah claimed the caliphate. Many Muslims opposed this because Yazid’s rule was seen as unjust and un-Islamic.

Imam Husayn ibn Ali (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and son of Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) and Fatimah (RA), refused to give allegiance (bay‘ah) to Yazid.

Journey to Karbala

The people of Kufa sent letters to Imam Husayn (RA), asking him to come and lead them against Yazid’s oppression.

Imam Husayn (RA) set out from Makkah with his family and a small group of companions.

Before reaching Kufa, Yazid’s forces blocked his path and forced him to stop in the desert of Karbala, near the Euphrates River.

Siege and Hardship

Imam Husayn’s camp was cut off from water for several days.

Among the group were women, children, and infants, including his six-month-old son Ali Asghar.

Despite extreme thirst and hardship, Imam Husayn (RA) refused to submit to injustice.

The Battle of Karbala (10th Muharram – Ashura)

On 10 Muharram, known as Ashura, Yazid’s army (thousands strong) attacked Imam Husayn’s small group of about 72 companions.

One by one, Imam Husayn’s companions and family members were martyred, including:

Ali Akbar (his son)

Abbas ibn Ali (his half-brother)

Ali Asghar (his infant son)

Finally, Imam Husayn (RA) himself was martyred.

Aftermath

The women and children, including Sayyidah Zaynab (RA), were taken captive.

Sayyidah Zaynab’s powerful speeches in Kufa and Damascus exposed Yazid’s cruelty and preserved the message of Karbala.

Imam Husayn’s stand became a symbol of truth, sacrifice, and resistance against oppression.

1. Ancient Origins

Makkah is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

According to Islamic tradition, Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) brought his wife Hajar and son Ismail (Ishmael) to this barren valley by God’s command.

When water ran out, Zamzam well miraculously sprang near Ismail’s feet.

Ibrahim and Ismail later built the Kaaba, the first house of worship dedicated to One God.

2. Pre-Islamic Makkah (Before 610 CE)

Makkah became a major religious and trade center in Arabia.

The Kaaba housed 360 idols, and people from different tribes came for pilgrimage.

The powerful Quraysh tribe controlled Makkah and its trade routes.

Despite idol worship, the city was respected as a sacred sanctuary where violence was forbidden.

3. Birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born in Makkah around 570 CE.

This is addressed to those who offer prayers on the road.

There is a concept called waqt (prescribed time), and it is a fard (obligatory condition) of prayer. In fact, it is one of the 13 fard of salah. Without knowing and observing this, salah is not valid.

Now the point is this: between one prayer time and the next, there is sufficient time to offer the prayer properly. Even if you are travelling, in most South Asian countries you will find a mosque somewhere, where you can comfortably fulfill your needs such as wudu and istinja, and then offer your prayer properly.

But if you ignore the prayer time and cause inconvenience to people by offering prayer on the road, do you truly believe that such a prayer will be accepted?

In Islam, seeking ilm (knowledge) is also fard. Therefore, think carefully and act accordingly.
