Improving the Green and Digital Skills of the Western Balkan VETs as a Bridge to Green Economy

The GREENBRIDGE project aims to bridge the skills gap in the green and digital sectors among vocational education and training (VET) providers in the Western Balkans. It supports VET institutions in aligning their programs with labor market needs, guided by the European Green Deal. The project focuses on equipping VET providers with the tools, training, and resources necessary for the twin transition to sustainability and digital innovation. GREENBRIDGE is working to identify the gaps between current VET offerings and the real demands of the labor market. Through tailored training programs for teachers, an innovative e-learning platform, and the integration of green and digital skills, the project brings modern learning opportunities to the region. It also fosters collaboration among stakeholders and encourages policy reforms to ensure lasting impact. What makes GREENBRIDGE innovative is its combination of green and digital competencies, the use of AI-powered chatbots, and mobile-responsive content. The project brings together the experience of EU-based organizations and local knowledge from the Western Balkans to create solutions adapted to local contexts.

Friday Teacher Task: What is the data telling us?

Give learners a simple chart or dashboard connected to sustainability.

It might show energy use, paper use, recycling, water consumption, or waste levels.

Ask them to answer three questions:

What is changing?
What might explain the change?
What action could be taken?

Then connect the example to a vocational context.

In construction, this might be material waste. In hospitality, it could be water use. In retail, it could be stock waste. In a workshop, it could be energy use.

Sustainability data becomes powerful when it supports decisions.

Digital tools such as spreadsheets, dashboards, smart meters, and reports can help organisations identify patterns, trends, outliers, and opportunities for improvement.

For example, a chart may show that energy use is rising every Monday, or that waste increases during certain activities.

But data also needs to be checked.

Is it complete? Is the measurement reliable? Does the result make sense? What context might explain it?

Friday Classroom Activity: Read a simple KPI table.

Give learners a small dataset related to sustainability.

It can show energy use, water use, waste, recycling, transport, or material consumption.

Ask them to identify:

one pattern
one unusual value
one possible explanation
one improvement idea

Then add context.

Was there a school event? Did the number of users change? Was new equipment installed? Did someone measure differently?

Friday Teacher Task: Track one sustainability activity.

This activity helps learners connect digital skills with real sustainability goals.

Choose one activity from your school, workshop, or workplace and ask learners to think about how it could be measured.

It could be electricity use, paper waste, water use, recycling, transport, heating, cooling, or material consumption.

Then ask learners to define one simple indicator.

For example:

number of printed pages
kilograms of waste collected
litres of water used
kWh of electricity consumed
number of items recycled

The goal is not complex data analysis.

The goal is to help learners understand that sustainability decisions often begin with simple observation, measurement, and interpretation.
