Can AI have a meaningful role in therapist training without replacing the human element?
That question was at the heart of another study from Instituti Nexus, presented at APA Convention 2026 in Washington, D.C.
Gabriel Kass presented “Therapist Experience with Novel Multicultural Orientation Training,” a study co-authored by Chloé Tanega-Baxter, Madalynn Hines, Luke McKissock, Emma Hills, Shane Trujillo, Sabina Musliu, Chloe Rogers, Matteo Bugatti, and Jesse Owen.
The study explored how 15 therapists-in-training experienced an innovative training approach that combined interactive client videos with feedback informed by expert ratings.
Participants valued having a space to practice without fear of judgment, while also emphasizing an important point: AI can enhance clinical training, but it cannot replace the teaching, guidance, and mentorship that come from human instructors.
