Representatives from Konoike Construction, Mr. Sadao Yamaoka and Mr. Jun Mizutani, paid a productive visit to the National University of Samoa (NUS) today as part of ongoing preparations for the upcoming construction of the Faculty of Health Science Building project on campus. The primary focus of the visit was to inspect and secure a suitable laydown area for the project. The team also worked closely with University representatives, PSM Director Mr Tuala Amerika Siale and Planning Manager Mr Vaelupemaua Jr Uatisone to confirm access to essential utilities, including water and electricity supply, which are critical for the commencement of construction activities. In addition, discussions were held regarding the establishment of a temporary site office that will support project operations during the construction phase.
The visit marks a significant step forward in the planning process, with both parties collaborating to ensure all logistical requirements are in place ahead of construction. Looking ahead, an official groundbreaking ceremony is anticipated to take place in July. Further discussions will be held to finalize arrangements and confirm a date for this event. Construction works are currently expected to begin in August, signaling the start of an exciting new development for the University community.
NUS looks forward to continuing its partnership with Konoike Construction and to witnessing the progress of this important project in the coming months.

The specialised training on Internet Exchange Point (IXP) Configuration, Administration, and Deployment, jointly hosted by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and the National University of Samoa (NUS).
The training was delivered by Internet Society (ISOC) IXP expert Warren Finch and APNIC trainer Dave Phelan, and was designed for key stakeholders within Samoaโs internet ecosystem, including Internet Service Providers (ISPs), network operators, content providers, academia, and other organisations committed to strengthening Samoaโs national and regional internet infrastructure.
This initiative represents an important first step in building local technical capacity to support the establishment and operation of an Internet Exchange Point in Samoa. Participants gained knowledge and practical skills in IXP configuration, administration, and deployment, while ISPs were introduced to peering arrangements that will enable local internet traffic to remain within Samoa.
By facilitating local traffic exchange, an IXP can improve internet performance, reduce latency, enhance resilience, and lower connectivity costs for internet users across the country.
Participants attended from MCIT, Vodafone Samoa, Digicel Samoa, the Samoa Submarine Cable Company, and the National University of Samoa.
The week-long programme consisted of two days of theoretical training followed by three days of hands-on technical exercises conducted at the National Data Centre.
We acknowledge and appreciate the leadership of MCIT in driving this important initiative, the collaboration and support of NUS, and the valuable technical expertise and knowledge sharing provided by APNIC and ISOC. Together, these efforts contribute significantly to advancing Samoaโs digital transformation and strengthening its internet infrastructure for the benefit of all Samoans.
