On Monday 9th October, Luigi Teilemb and Thierry Rory from the Bachelor of tourism and hospitality were handed the first prize for their amazing poster.
This competition, organized by the students of the Bachelor of Tourism and hospitality’s English teacher, in collaboration with the management of Iririki and Mr Lemonnier their communication teacher, required them to create a poster promoting the “all day breakfast”, available every Sunday from 7 am to 1 pm on Iririki. To make things harder, the students were to create a poster featuring a reference to a national or local form of art to make the poster more eye-catching, a recognized trick of advertising.
Inspired by the local tradition of sand drawing, Luigi and Thierry offered us an original, artistic and efficient creation. Their efforts were rewarded by a voucher for a nice dinner for two on Iririki, graciously offered by the resort’s management, along with a letter of appreciation for their creation.
A big thank you to Iririki resort for their participation in that professional project for our students, and again, congratulations to our winners!

Visit of Nicola Barnes, from Pandanus Consulting Ltd.
On October 8th, the francophone students from the Bachelor of Tourism and hospitality got a visit from Nicola Barnes during their English class.
Nicky, as she asked us to call her, has lived in Vanuatu for 11 years now and has just become a Vanuatu citizen. She told us about her childhood, growing up with parents who gave her her love for craft and teaching. She then explained that after extensive travels for her job as a consultant in a phone company, she came back to Vanuatu and rapidly decided to get back to her first love: craft.
She realized that the local handicraft products, though creative and original, were not marketed as well as they could be to tourists. Foreign products, mostly cheap Asian-made souvenirs were sold to tourists on local souvenir stalls. After making contacts with local artists in weaving, sewing and sculpting, she opened her shop in town: Pandanus where she sells mostly local products, original creations inspired by tradition with a modern twist. She also works with Vanuatu Skills Partnership (ex TVET) to help coach local producers on how to develop and market their products in a way that is going to appeal to tourists. This is all while running her consulting company: Pandanus Consulting Ltd.
We are very grateful to this really busy lady for having taken the time to come talk to us about her vision and work with local craftsmen and women, who all contribute through their work to the economy of tourism and to the attraction of our country. Thank you so much Nicky for your visit!
