Attackers rely on getting you on your own and away from the attention of others.
If you think you’re getting into a dangerous situation, make as much noise as possible and do everything you can to draw the attention of anyone who might be nearby.
There’s no need to wait until the attacker makes their move. You might look silly making all that noise, but better silly and safe than quiet and in danger.

You’re always safer in a group, but this is especially true if you’re expecting to be drinking.
When you’re out, look out for your friends. Keep an eye on each other’s drinks, and pay attention if any of your friends seem more inebriated than you’d expect for the amount of alcohol they’ve had. Stay together, and make sure everyone gets home safely.

It may sound basic, but never underestimate the value of surprise.
Attackers, purse snatchers, and other robbers use the element of surprise as their foundation – you can too. If you find yourself in a risky situation, move suddenly and with certainty. You might risk looking silly by suddenly turning and running away, but you’ll be safe!

Attackers are looking for an easy target. Don’t walk with your head down or your shoulders slumped!
Present yourself with confidence. Hold your head up and shoulders back, and pay attention to your surroundings.

It’s a good practice to let family and close friends know where you’re going to be when you go out, but not everyone that follows you on social media is a close friend!
This also applies with selfies and videos. Wait until you get home before uploading.

If someone is making you uncomfortable, speak up.
Setting clear boundaries can keep you from getting into a dangerous situation. If you’re a non-confrontational person, when someone tries to cajole you into going somewhere, your instinct may be to try to meet them halfway or offer up an alternative.
Though it’s hard, it’s essential to make your boundaries clear. When you don’t want to do something, say no unambiguously. Don’t let anyone convince you to give up a safe location for a riskier one.
