Some common phrases used in talking about love and marriage.
💘Be head over heels (in love)
Ý nghĩa: Yêu ai một cách vô cùng say đắm
Ví dụ: Look at them. They’re head over heels in love with each other.
💘Fall in love with somebody
Ý nghĩa: Phải lòng một ai đó
Ví dụ: I think I’m falling in love with my best friend. What should I do?
💘Be an item
Ý nghĩa: Là một cặp
Ví dụ: I didn’t know Chris and Sue were an item. They didn’t even look at each other at dinner.
💘Be lovey – dovey
Ý nghĩa: thể hiện tình cảm âu yếm quấn quýt nơi công cộng
Ví dụ: I don’t want to go out with Jenny and David. They’re so lovey-dovey, I just can’t stand it.
💘Blind date
Ý nghĩa: Hẹn hò gặp mặt lần đầu
Ví dụ: My sister keeps organising blind dates for me. She’d just love to fix me up with someone.
💘Blinded by love
Ý nghĩa: Mù quáng vì yêu
Ví dụ: She is so blinded by love that she can’t see him for who he truly is.
💔Break up/ Split up (With Somebody)
Ý nghĩa: Chia tay/ chấm dứt mối quan hệ yêu đương
Ví dụ: Have you heard? Marian and Joseph have broken up. I wonder what went wrong. They were so good together.
💘Carry a Torch (for)
Ý nghĩa: Tiếp tục vương vấn yêu một người dù đã chia tay
Ví dụ: Look at Susan. Joe broke up with her a year ago, but she still carries a torch for him.
💘go out with s.o: have a romantic relationship: hẹn hò lãng mạn. Ex: I have been going out with him for many years.
💘Kiss and make up
Ý nghĩa: Làm lành sau cãi vã
Ví dụ: Our relationship is like a roller-coaster ride. We fight nearly every day, but then we always kiss and make up.
💘Love at first sight
Ý nghĩa: Phải lòng ai từ cái nhìn đầu tiên (Nhất kiến trung tình)
Ví dụ: My wife and I met at a party. It was love at first sight.
💘Love rat
Ý nghĩa: Kẻ ngoại tình/ lừa dối người yêu
Ví dụ: Don’t even think about asking Jane out. How could you look your wife in the eye? Don’t be a love rat.
💘Match made in heaven
Ý nghĩa: một cặp trời sinh
Ví dụ: Do you think Matt and Amanda will get married? – I hope they will. They’re a match made in heaven.
💘May-December Marriage
Ý nghĩa: Một cuộc hôn nhân giữa 2 người cách xa tuổi nhau, thường là người phụ nữ trẻ cùng một người đàn ông lớn tuổi.
Ví dụ: Their May-December marriage sparked gossip that she was only after his money.
💔Old Flame
Ý nghĩa: Bạn trai/ bạn gái cũ
Ví dụ: I’m seeing my old flame tomorrow night.
💘Tie the knot
Ý nghĩa: Kết hôn
Ví dụ: When are you and Jenny going to tie the knot? – This year, but we haven’t set a date yet.
💘To love someone with all of one’s heart and soul
Ý nghĩa: Yêu ai đó bằng cả trái tim
Ví dụ: John loves Leslie with all his heart and soul.
💘Under Someone’s Spell
Ý nghĩa: Bị mê hoặc bởi ai đó
Ví dụ: Jenna broke up with Ted. But now she’s under his spell again.
Let's listen then write what you hear and say them out loud. In this lesson, we'll learn some vocabulary and phrases.
- bet: be pretty sure
- checkup: an examination to be sure everything is healthy
-chunk: a big piece
- cleaning: removing anything that is on the teeth
-comfy: comfortable
-have something checked out: have something looked at or examined
- hygienist: professional who cleans your teeth with special tools
-I’m afraid: unfortunately
- beinfected: filled with bacteria and very sore!
-instruments: special tools
-like crazy: A LOT!
-medication: medicine
- molar: large tooth in the back of the mouth
- offend: cause someone to feel angry or upset
-oh, come on: really!
-open wide: open your mouth (so I can get these dental tools in there and find the problem!)
-poke: touch, in a sharp way
-procedure: process of repairing something
-root: the base part of the tooth, under the gums (mouth tissue)
-root canal: dental procedure removing material around the root of the tooth
-temporary: for a short time
-throbbing: aching, almost vibrating
-we’d better (had better): we should
-weird: strange
