Shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic sent New York City into quarantine, Professors Susan Smith-Peter and Joseph Frusci created a Facebook community page so that the Staten Island community could share their stories, as well as their digital photos and videos to show how the pandemic was impacting their lives.
The presentation will showcase how the oral histories and the material collected through the page were integrated into coursework that allowed students to become the historians of their communities.

I am reaching out to share a film screening and discussion of "My Pandemic" on March 11 from 2:30-3:30 pm. "My Pandemic" is a short film co-produced by my students in Urban Geography last fall 2020 as an autoethnography of their lives during the pandemic. Great work by Professor Susan Smith-Peter and her team for documenting history of the pandemic on Staten Island. Images were also provided by Steve White, a freelance photographer and firefighter. In addition, a video blog from CSI MSEd student Ashley Olivetti and a school blog by CSI History alumnus Andrew Savage were included in the exhibit.

Social justice begins with your voice.
Perform your original work at Snug Harbor with Porch Plays
Snug Harbor is launching an open call for submissions to participate in Porch Plays, a new project that explores the “porch/front stoop” and its role in community building and storytelling.
Porch Plays will center the stories and artistry of communities of color, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities, other marginalized communities, and their allies. The performances will be staged on the porch of Snug Harbor's historic Cottage C during the weekend of October 23 - 25, 2020.
They are seeking submissions for 10-minute pieces in theater, dance, music, poetry and storytelling that explore community resilience. A stipend will be provided to each project selected for performance. As a guide, they offer the following questions as prompts:
- What does it mean to be in community with one another? A community is defined as a social unit with commonality such as norms, religion, values, customs, or identity. Communities may share a sense of place situated in a given geographical area or in virtual space through communication platforms.
- How do you persevere despite the social injustices and inequities you experience?
- What does resilience look like to you?
