Essential English Phrases for Economic Thesis Writing
(Vietnamese below)
Mastering academic phrasing is essential for writing a clear, persuasive economics thesis. Using standard academic structures helps present complex statistical models, theoretical frameworks, and policy implications with clarity and precision.

Introduction & Literature Review
To set the scope of your research and highlight existing literature gaps, use these foundational patterns:

Introducing the research topic: "This study investigates the empirical relationship between [Variable A] and [Variable B] in [Region/Market]."

Highlighting research gaps: "While existing literature extensively covers X, limited empirical attention has been devoted to Y."

Stating objectives & hypotheses: "The primary objective of this paper is to evaluate whether... under the assumption that..."

Data, Methodology & Empirical Analysis
Economics relies heavily on data interpretation and quantitative modeling. Frame your methodological choices clearly:

Describing the data dataset: "The empirical analysis utilizes cross-sectional / panel data spanning from [Year] to [Year], sourced from [Institution/Database]."

Explaining econometric models: "To address potential endogeneity concerns, a fixed-effects regression model / instrumental variable approach is employed."

Describing trends and correlations: "The descriptive statistics reveal a strong positive correlation between [X] and [Y], holding all else equal (ceteris paribus)."

Discussion & Policy Implications
Interpret your econometric results and translate data into real-world economic insights:

Presenting statistical findings: "The regression results demonstrate a statistically significant effect of [Variable] at the 5% level."

Explaining economic mechanisms: "This phenomenon can be attributed to underlying market frictions, supply constraints, or consumer behavioral shifts."

Recommending policy action: "From a macroeconomic perspective, these findings suggest that policymakers should prioritize..."

Conclusion
Summarize your contribution succinctly without introducing new data:

Concluding main findings: "In conclusion, this research provides strong empirical evidence that..."

Acknowledging limitations: "A limitation of this study is the lack of disaggregated data, which opens avenues for future research."

HOW A GOOD LECTURE AFFECTS TO YOUR CAREER?
A well-crafted thesis acts as a powerful launchpad for your professional career, serving as tangible proof of your expertise, critical thinking, and intellectual discipline. Far beyond a mere academic requirement, a standout thesis demonstrates to top employers that you can independently research complex issues, analyze data critically, and synthesize actionable solutions—skills highly prized in every modern industry.

Publishing exceptional research often opens doors to academic journals, international conferences, and valuable industry partnerships. This exposure expands your professional network, connecting you with mentors, field leaders, and prospective recruiters early on. Ultimately, a high-quality thesis transforms you from a generic graduate into a recognized specialist in your domain, giving you a distinct competitive advantage during job interviews and significantly accelerating your trajectory toward leadership roles.

LECTURE BY ENGLISH IS NOT AS HARD AS YOU THINK
Writing a thesis often feels like climbing a steep mountain, but it is much more manageable than most students think. The secret isn't genius; it's simply breaking a monumental task down into small, actionable steps.

Key Strategies:

Topic Selection: Pick a topic you genuinely care about to keep your momentum going.

Outline First: Map out your chapters before writing in detail.

Daily Consistency: Write 200–300 words a day rather than pulling all-nighters.

Shift your mindset from "writing a masterpiece" to "telling a clear story." With a steady routine and structured plan, finishing your thesis is completely within your reach.

Study Skills- Assignment Planning: Structuring your Assignment
This guide discusses basic university essay structure.

A basic essay structure consists of these main elements:

Introduction
Main Body
Conclusion
Reference List
Academic essays are usually written in the third person, meaning you will use formal language such as:
"it was suggested..." rather than "I suggested..."

It is important that your essay is clear to understand so that you can identify where you have met specific criteria. By producing a clear, well planned essay you are more likely to maintain focus and ensure that you are meeting the specific criteria asked for by your tutor.

Essays do not have subheadings but are a continuous piece of text. The only subheading expected is to indicate the beginning of your reference list. Your reference list is not included in your word count but citations included in your text are included.

If you have any questions after reading this Study Skills Guide you can seek clarification and/or further advice at the Study Skills drop in, every weekday on the library website, or look out for Study Skills Roadshows on your campus.

You can book a one to one appointment of up to one hour with a Study Skills Adviser to discuss sections of your work either on Microsoft Teams or at the St. Peter's Library or the Library in the Murray Health building. Students may book up to two appointments for each assignment.

We run Masterclasses, open to all students on a rolling programme on topics such as Academic Writing, Assignment Planning, How to Reference etc.

Report Writing
Remember that not all assignments will be structured in the same format as an essay. If asked to produce a report there is an emphasis on producing a formal piece with the intention of communicating findings and or results.

When writing a report consider why you are writing it and who you are writing it for?, Is it for your academic tutor, the general public or are you being asked to write it for an industry professional or client?

Reports are usually assessed on their coherence, layout, language, content and referencing.

It is important that you are concise when writing a report, you may write using headings and subheadings and may have numbers or bullet points in addition to structured sentences.

It is important to adhere to academic writing conventions when writing a report.

An example report structure is listed below, please see your assignment brief for further, more specific information:

Title- descriptive and specific about the report.
Abstract or Executive Summary- a brief summary of the report. You may write this last as it can include some findings and conclusions.
Contents- titles for each section, making it easier to find relevant sections.
Introduction- Background to the research and include clear aims and objectives.
Methodology- State about research undertaken if relevant. Description of methods used such as observations, interviews and questionnaires and a rationale behind those decisions.
Results or Findings- Summary of research findings in an objective manner with graphs, statistics and or tables.
Discussion- Critical evaluation of your findings. What your findings may mean within the wider context.
Conclusions/ Recommendations- Summarise the report and give any recommendations for further research or implications in the area of study.
Reference List- The reference list for any sources used in the report in the correct style for your programme. Look at Cite Them Right Online for formatting details for the referencing style used.
Appendices- They can be used to refer to points in the report. A single appendices is an appendix. They can be used to provide back up information. It must be directly relevant to the content of the report. They should be numbered in the order mentioned in your report. For example, 'see appendix 1'.

WHY IELTS OR TOEIC IS NOT ENOUGH FOR ENGLISH-MEDIUM UNIVERSITY STUDIES

IELTS and TOEIC have long been regarded as the "golden ticket" to English-taught university programs. However, achieving a high score on these tests does not automatically mean a student is fully prepared for the realities of academic life.

1. General English vs. Specialized Academic English
Standardized language tests primarily evaluate general proficiency or basic workplace communication. Upon entering university, students are confronted with complex, field-specific jargon in heavy textbooks. Comprehending a short reading passage in an exam is vasty different from critically reading dozens of dense academic papers each week.

2. Critical Thinking and Academic Writing
In IELTS Task 2, students write a brief 250-word essay on a familiar topic. At the university level, however, coursework demands research papers ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 words. These require formal academic citation (e.g., APA, MLA) and deep analytical reasoning—skills that standardized language tests simply do not measure.

3. Real-Time Interaction and Discussion
University classrooms expect students to deliver presentations, engage in debates, and collaborate on group projects. A high Speaking score earned by answering simple questions in a one-on-one interview does not guarantee the confidence needed to defend an argument before a panel or actively contribute to multicultural group discussions.

Conclusion: IELTS and TOEIC are merely prerequisites—the baseline proof of language comprehension. True academic success requires continuous development in research skills, critical thinking, and proactive academic engagement.

The top 5 note-taking mistakes that every student makes (and how to fix them)
Source: hardlyhamilton.com
1. Trying to write everything down
The teacher or lecturer in the room is seen as this mystical being of knowledge, and therefore you might feel compelled to write down absolutely everything that they say. Doing so leads to passive note-taking, where you’re so busy writing that you don’t actually have the capacity to process and understand the information.

How to avoid: You are an editor, not a transcriber, so it’s about a mindset shift. Listen out for keywords and concepts, focus on the main ideas, and summarise them in your own words. Start using abbreviations, symbols or dual code notes as images to speed up your process.

2. Only highlighting or underlining a textbook
Who doesn’t love highlighting? It makes you feel organised and productive but, if you’re not doing something with that highlighting, it becomes utterly pointless – and you’re not, ultimately, learning anything. Highlighting without note-taking is a passive activity that won’t improve comprehension or retention.

How to avoid: Treat highlighting as a first step, but not the only step. Once you’ve highlighted a sentence or phrase, write a brief summary or question in the margin, or pop that phrase and your thoughts into a separate notebook. This will force you to think about what you’ve read, and the Cornell Notes method actually works really well with this.

3. Waiting to review your notes
The forgetting curve shows that we forget information really quickly after we learn it, and the amount of information we forget increases the longer it’s been since you’ve looked at your notes, or done some form of interleaving, like a quick knowledge check. If you don’t look at your notes again until just before an exam, you’ll have probably forgotten most of it.

How to avoid: The best way to avoid the impact of this curve is to review your notes within 24 hours. Don’t spend hours doing this (especially since it’ll be information overload at Uni), but a quick 10-15 minute review after class can dramatically improve retention. Clarify anything that’s unclear, add missing details, and summarise your main points. Speak to your friends who were there too if you’re still unsure about anything.

4. Not having a consistent system
Swapping from analogue to digital note-taking, or scribbling everything into random note books without rhyme or reason, can lead to a system that’s really quite tricky to use. Not having a clearly defined system creates stress and wastes your time.

How to avoid: Choose a consistent method that works for you – whether it’s Cornell Notes, the Outline Method, Spider Diagrams, or something else entirely. Experiment with digital and analogue note-taking to see which works best, and establish a consistent structure for each class, using folders, tabs or tags to keep everything organised.

5. Simply copying slides or the whiteboard
Simply copying whatever’s on the board is a huge mistake. Slides should be made to summarise key points, or as a visual aid for the lecturer. For a school teacher, that’s the best way to use slides, since you shouldn’t ever just be reading from the board to educate others.

How to avoid: Listen to the lecturer’s explanations and add context to whatever’s being said on the slides. Add examples, your own questions, thoughts generated from the pre-reading, and anything else that’s not been explicitly shown. Your notes need to be a supplement for the slides, rather than a duplicate of them.

COMMON MISTAKES STUDENTS MAKE IN ACADEMIC WRITING AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

Academic writing remains one of the most important abilities that any student is required to possess, although most of them make avoidable mistakes. Punctuation, spelling, citation mistakes, and vagueness all tend to decrease overall grades and create weak arguments. If you have ever thought to yourself, ‘How can I enhance my academic writing?’, this guide will assist you. It is important to know the most common mistakes in writing so that appropriate corrections can be applied to them. If you want to make your academic papers more powerful and informative, try to consider the above tips.

1. Poor Thesis Statement
The Mistake
A weak or unclear thesis statement can make your paper directionless. Writing a thesis can pose many problems to students, and most of them either produce an ambiguous thesis or no thesis at all.

Weak thesis statement: Technology is an influence on the lives we lead.

The premise of this statement is rather vague, and it does not pinpoint the way technology affects daily life.

How to Avoid It?
Make sure the thesis statement is easily understood and must be arguable and specific.
In your statement, identify what it is you are answering as well as the reason for the answer along with how you present the information.
Make sure you take a firm position on your subject.
Strong thesis statement example: “AI is already changing the labour market by replacing human input and output in certain tasks that can be automated and creating new types of jobs.”

2. Lack of Proper Structure
The Mistake
A common problem that many students display is various issues in how they present their essays. This is made more so if the ideas presented are not well organized, since the paper statement of work will be all over the place.

How to Avoid It?
It is necessary to use the following outline accompanied by relevant examples and explanations as a model for academic writing:

Background information – Define your topic, its importance, and significance.
Body Paragraphs – Each body paragraph should focus on a single concept and give evidence.
Conclusion – Briefly and concisely, reiterate the topic and things to be discussed.
To connect the ideas, it is more appropriate to use transition words such as therefore, however, in contrast, and moreover.

3. Weak Arguments and Insufficient Evidence
The Mistake
It is in this section that students make arguments without referencing to support them. While reporting an opinion, it’s not sufficient to write what one feels in academic writing.

Example of a weak argument:

“It is wiser for a student to learn on the internet than in a traditional setting.”

It is not supported by any evidence and the reasons as to why remain unknown.

How to Avoid It?
It is necessary to use academic sources only, such as articles, books, and referential publications issued by the government.
Support them with examples and statistical data where possible, or give logical reasons as to why it may be the trend.
Always cite your sources properly.
Example of a strong argument:

A study done by researchers from Harvard University in the year 2023 compared the performance of students, who were enrolled in online courses with that of their counterparts in conventional learning environment and found that they performed 15% better in assessments.

4. Grammar and Spelling Errors
The Mistake
It is important not to have any grammatical mistakes in writing; even simple mistakes, such as Split infinitives may hurt your writing. Some of the errors that one is bound to evidence in most students’ papers include spelling errors, failure in subject-verb agreement, and other issues related to with wrong use of punctuation marks.

How to Avoid It?
Take time to use the grammar checkers such as Grammarly or the Hemingway Editor.
Encourage another individual, such as a friend or a tutor, to review what you have written.
Example of a common mistake:

Buying a laptop for every student is also preferred by many students. (Incorrect)

“Every learner has his or her laptop.” (Correct)

5. Plagiarism and Improper Citations
The Mistake
This is particularly important because plagiarism is considered a severe misconduct in the academic world. Some of the offences committed by many students include the failure to cite sources or cite in a poor method.

How to Avoid It?
Always bring documents in your own words by rewording while retaining the original meaning.
Always include citations for all the sources used in the format agreed on by both the instructor and the academic institution, e.g., APA, MLA, Harvard, etc.
Students should use tools such as Turnitin or Quetext for plagiarism check services.
Example of correct citation (APA style):

As stated by Smith (2022), climate change is increasing as a result of human actions.

7. Overcomplicated or Wordy Sentences
The Mistake
Some of the students who want to impress the readers also tend to overuse complex and complicated simple sentences as much as possible.

How to Avoid It?
It is recommended that the language should be clear and precise and no extra words should use while drafting an order.
Use clear and concise terms where complex ones are employed now.
Example:

Because the experiment did not turn out to be successful in some way, changes were made to it. (Wordy)

This is indicated in the second sentence: “Since the experiment failed, we made modifications.”(Concise)

8. Weak Conclusion
The Mistake
Some of the students end their papers merely by repeating their thesis statements but fail to include important arguments.

How to Avoid It?
Summarize key points.

In summary, it is possible to conclude the following about the topic
Provide your final note about the topic of the paper with a specific recommendation, suggested change, or conclusion based on your findings and analysis.
Do not bring in new concepts in the conclusion section.
Example:

Finally, it is significant to note that remote working is flexible, more economical and increases productivity; therefore, being a sustainable work model to embrace in the future.
