Tiêu chuẩn Oeko-Tex 100 đã được viện kiểm nghiệm Hohenstein Đức và Institute für Oekologie, Technik und Innovation ÖTI (Wien/Áo) công bố và áp dụng vào năm 1992. Mục đích là các sản phẩm dệt may từ các xưởng sản xuất thông thường, sẽ được kiểm nghiệm các chất độc hại trong phòng thí nghiệm và sau đó sẽ được gắn nhãn „confidence in Textiles“ nhằm thông tin cho người tiêu dùng. Các sản phẩm dệt may có gắn nhãn Oeko-Tex đã được kiểm chứng là có chứa ít các chất độc hại gây ảnh hưởng đến sức khoẻ hơn giới hạn đã được thiết lập.
