Miao Sword
A traditional weapon and utility tool of the Miao people, used in Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangxi and surrounding regions.
- History: Recorded since the Ming and Qing dynasties. Traditionally forged over 16 years: iron is buried at birth, refined annually, resulting in extreme sharpness and durability
- Design: Mostly straight or slightly curved blade, often with a ring pommel, black lacquered scabbard, decorated with ethnic patterns
- Use: Hunting, self‑defense, ceremonial object, and symbol of Miao cultural identity
2. Miaodao / Sprout Saber
A two‑handed long saber of Chinese martial arts, not linked to the Miao ethnic group .
- History: Derived from Ming‑dynasty long sabers; techniques documented by General Qi Jiguang. Named “Miaodao” in the Republican era, meaning “sprout‑shaped blade”
- Design: Overall length ≥1.2 m, narrow blade, thick spine, long grip for two‑hand use; excels at both cutting and thrusting
- Use: Former infantry weapon; today practiced in Piguaquan, Tongbeiquan and other traditional wushu styles
苗族刀(Miao Ethnic Sword)
苗族传统兵器与生活器具,流传于贵州、云南、广西等苗族聚居区。
