Today we celebrate the third woman to ever win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry: Dorothy Hodgkin!

Hodgkin is most well-known for pioneering methods in the field of X-ray crystallography. She was able to determine the three-dimensional structures of biomolecules using a new technique called X-ray crystallography, which she helped to advance. X-ray crystallography involves beams of X-rays hitting atoms of a crystal (like those found in materials such as salts, metals, minerals, and semiconductors), which are then diffracted into many different directions. Hodgkin used this version of the technique to determine the atomic and molecular structures of penicillin, insulin, and vitamin B12. Her work on protein crystallography earned her the Noble Prize in Chemistry in 1964.

X-ray crystallography is critical in determining the structures of many biological molecules in order to understand their function.

MSI students recently joined an exciting field trip to Vina Kraft Paper, one of the leading paper manufacturers in Vietnam.

During the visit, students explored modern paper production processes, industrial-scale manufacturing systems, quality control procedures, and sustainability practices in the paper industry. The trip provided valuable insights into how materials science is applied in real industrial environments — from raw material processing to final product performance.

Beyond classroom learning, the experience helped students better understand the connection between materials engineering, industrial production, and sustainable manufacturing.
