Let's have fun with 10 phrases for changing your mind.


1. I changed my mind
It’s the simplest way to say that in the past, you had one opinion, but later you changed it.
Ex: I intended to buy a car, but then I changed my mind to buy a motorcycle instead.

2. I had a change of heart
“a change of heart” is different from “change your mind”. “a change of heart” refers to changing your feelings, attitude, or behavior. Usually to be more positive.
Ex: The boss told us we were going to have to work on the holiday, but then he had a change of heart and gave us the day off.

3: Hang on a minute/ Hang on a second
Used the phrases to tell the other person to wait. They’re often used when you’re debating a decision, and you need a little more time to think.
Ex: Hang on a minute. I need to talk to you.

4: On second thought…
Used this phrase to introduce your final opinion or decision, which you believe is better.
Ex:
A: Let’s go to the mall this afternoon.
B: Great.
C: On second thought, it’s probably going to be really crowded because today’s Friday. How about going to the movies instead, guy?

5: On reflection/ Upon reflection
Used this phrase to say that you’ve given special thought to the decision before changing it.
Ex: I was thinking of becoming an engineer, but upon reflection, I decided that teaching would be a better career choice for me.

6: After further consideration…
This is more formal phrase. Used to say that you’ve given additional consideration to the situation, and changed your opinion or plan. It can be used in business English.
Ex: We appreciate your having taken the time to prepare the proposal, but after further consideration, we’ve decided not to continue this project.

7: He convinced me to../ He persuaded me to…
Used this phrase when another person influenced your decision.
Ex: I was planning on travelling to Mexico, but Dan convinced me to go to Costa Rica instead.

8: I’m not sure when I was thinking when I …
Used this phrase to say that your previous decision or opinion wasn’t logical.
Ex: I'm sorry. I really don’t have the time to help organizing the event. I don’t know what I was thinking when I say “Yes”.

9: I did a 180
It means to completely change your opinion to the opposite position.
Ex: I used to make fun of people who don’t eat meat, but after learning more about the subject, I did a 180 and I'm now a vegetarian myself.

10: think over
Used this phrase to consider something carefully, especially before reaching a decision
Ex: I’ve been thinking over what you said.

11. as free as a bird ~ completely free, carefree
I was as free as a bird when I finished my final school exam.
